DATE OF SURVEY September 25 and 27, 1979 SUMMARY Good work practices and proper demolition procedures kept the exposure to asbestos fibers to a minimum. The work is continuing along the back channel of the South Charleston Plant and will ter minate at the Tank Car Loading Rack on the mainland near the Automated Warehouse. DISCUSSION Construction insulators are in the process of removing 1200 feet of insulation from a four-inch polyol filling line which is located on the south side of the Island Polyol Complex. This line when refurbished will enable the Shipping Department to load rail cars from the Polyol Unit. The old insulation was wet down with water as much as possible and every precaution to reduce asbestos exposure to employees was UCC 017344 Mr. H. L. Reveal 2 10/3/79 followed. These precautions include approved disposable dust respirators, coveralls, gloves, and bagging and labeling of stripped insulation for landfill. The Technical Center Industrial Hygiene/Environmental Protection Department sampled the laborers who were bagging the stripped insu lation in the morning of September 25 and the insulators dismantling old unibestos-type insulation on the 27th. The results of the sam- ; pling are presented below. Also included in the sampling was a truck driver hired by an outside contractor to haul the stripped insulation to the landfill area. Additional monitoring will be necessary to maintain compliance with the asbestos standard.
