3ff fR .3 .2 .6 _ I U J i SEP I 2 ?no? 2002SEP 19 PH12*U6 MEMORANDUM SUBJECT: Meeting Summary; August 30, 2002 EPA/Industry Meeting on Selected Toxicology Studies o fP F ^ A FROM: Oscar Hernandez, Directo/vS-----Risk Assessment Division (7403M) TO: Administrative Record File AR-226: PFOS, PFOA, Telomers, and Related Chemicals On August 30, 2002, a meeting was held with toxicologists from EPA and the Fluoropolymer Manufacturers Group (FMG) to discuss the results of the recently completed two generation reproductive toxicity study and 6-month monkey study of the ammonium salt of perfluorooctanoic acid (APFO). This meeting was held as a follow-up action item from a meeting held on August 13, 2002, with Steve Johnson, the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances, and the corporate executives from seven companies involved with the FMG and the Telomers Research Program (TRP) at EPA headquarters. The data submissions for these two toxicology studies can be found in the Administrative Record for perfluorooctanoic acid, AR 226. The meeting agenda and the list of meeting attendees is attached to this memorandum. Industry scientists provided a verbal summary of the findings of the two generation reproductive toxicity study. As part of this summary, industry scientists pointed out some difficulties in interpreting the data on estrus cyclicity due to the manner in which the contract laboratory had reported the data. EPA scientists made recommendations to redo the analysis utilizing a different approach. In addition, EPA scientists suggested that an analysis be done of implantation losses. Both recommendations were accepted by the industry scientists, and they will be sharing their results with EPA scientists as soon as possible. Industry scientists then provided a verbal summary of the findings of the 6 month monkey study. Following discussion with the EPA scientists, no outstanding issues were identified. No further meetings were scheduled. If necessary, a teleconference call will be scheduled to discuss the follow-up analyses of the estrus cyclicity and the implantation loss data.
