April 1, 1957 QUARTERLY REPORT OF THE SECRETARY January 1 to March 31 1957 The following report covers the highlights of Association activities during the first quarter of 1957* More detailed information on those activities or others not enuneratod herein will be supplied on request. CERERAX. 1. "Lead" - One issue of our publication "Lead" was published and mailed to our list of about JOjCOO users and prospective users of lead. L. 2. Research - The subcommittee of the Tochnical Steering Committee obtained proposals from three independent research organisations for a survey of industry research possibilities which will be submitted to the main committee with reooey- cendations shortly. 0 3. Cable Sheathing - The Cable Sheathing Task Croup arranged with a leading manufacturer of extrusion presses to construct a press for experimental extrusion of lead alloys. The experiments will be conducted by the press manufacturer with the technical assistance of our group. u. Annual Meeting - Arrangements were made for the Annual Meeting to be held on April lypy, at the Crake Hotel in Chicago, What is believed will be an unusually interesting progrea was developed and advance registrations indicate a good turn-out, 5. .'..I.M.E, - The Secretary attended the annual meeting of the American Institute of tiring, Metallurgical and Petroleun Enginoors. 6. Annual Review of lead - The annual review of lead, prepared by tho Secretary and appearing in the February issue of sAcginccring and Mining Journal,* waa reprinted and circulated to members, 7. Inquiries - Inquiries for Association literature and assistance are being received at an unprecedented rate probably as tho result of nore frequent publi cation of "Lead* and our new or expandod educational activities. 8. Miscellaneous - The usual routine statistical and other services were ocntlnued and the secretary continues to eerve on an Advisory Coomittes of the Bureau of the Census for metals, . s m mjneau"' s V\ Quarterly Report 2 - April 1, 1957 HEALTH AND SAFETY 9, Legislation - Proposed legislation ininical to the interests of the lead Inins triej has boon followed end, as of this writing, with favorable results, (Gratifying evidence of the value of the "American Standard Specification to Minimise Hazards to Children frco Residual Surface Coating Materials," developed at our Instance, was shorn by its use by the Health Commissioner of Baltimore in opposing a Maryland bill which would have been materially damaging to our interests. 10, Plastic Stabilizers - Three conferences have been held with representatives oi the plastics inaustry in planning for a further study of the use of lead stabilizers in plastio pipe, 11, Ceramics - In the interest of promoting the use of lead glazes, speakers on ijcdical and engineering health control have been secured for the forthcoming annual meeting of the American Ceramic Society at Dallas. (See pago 3), 12, Meetings - The cnnual Congress on Industrial Health of the American Medical .association and the Greater Hew Tcrk Safety Convention, in Los Angeles and Kow fork respectively, were attended, as was a meeting cf the Metropolitan How York Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. - 13, Bulletin -- Cfao Lead Hygiene and Safety Bulletin has been issued during the quarter. . 1U. International Contacts - Much time end effort have been given to arranging contacts for br. n. E. George, Chief Medical Officer of the Consolidated Zinc Proprietary, Ltd. of Australia, who arrived fer a three-months tour of industrial and medical establisnocnts in the 0.5.,.. and Canada. Speaking engagements were arranged for him at the forthcoming Industrial Health Conference in St. Louis end at the annual meeting of our Association in Chicago. 15. Coealtteos - The health and safety director is currently a member of a com mittee of the National Safety Council nnd chairman cf committees of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, tbs American Industrial Ryglene Association and the American Standards Association, Two meetings of these committees, in New fork and Chicago, have been attended. 16. "Facts and Fallacies" - The demand for reprints of Dr. Johnstone's "fact# and fallacies cf Klucbisa" has continued. It is new being used for instruction in three medical schools. 17. Visits - Nineteen member company plants and offices were visited and six consultations held with industrial physicians in Milwaukee, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston. Home Builders Show - tfs exhibited at the Shew in connection with the annual meeting of the National Association of Home Builders in Chioago in January, Load pinching and sheet metal work wore featured. . 19. Newark College of Engineering - Two 3-hour lectures on load as an engineering material were iurcsontea beiore several hundred graduate students at this Important school for the sixth successive year. 21. H-umbers1 Text Book - Our text book on lead work for plunbers oontinuea to sell consistently, rath over 1*00 copios sold In this period. 22. Soldering Handbook - Our Solder Committee net with the American Voiding Society Committee "eSia'bout" percent cf the cate rial for the Soldering Handbook was approved for publication. N.A.C.E, - The annual naetlng of tho National Association of Corrosion Englneers was attended by a staff ceaber. CERAMIC3 2u "Lead in the Ceramic Industries" - This book was eailod to cur list of about U, yjO ceramists and hadan excellent recoption. It had exceptionally good reviews in the trade press and was the subject of an editorial in 1 Ceranic Industry.11 Over 5,200 copies have now boon distributed through cur regular mailing list and roquosts. 0 25. Advertising - Tho first two advertisements in our now campaign appeared in "Ceranic Industry* and "Bulletin of the American Ceramic Society* in March. Two additional ads are ready for publication and two are in preparation. Member* are being supplied with reprints. \. 26. Research - .xrangemonts have been nada fer a research grant to the School or oeramies at Rutgers end a research fellowship at the Department of Ceranic Engin eering, University of Illinois. Work under the grant at Rutgers will start as soon as the right nan is found to conduct it and will emphasise the use of lead in cera mic bodies. The fellowship at Illinois will start with tho new school year In September with emphasis on low temperature porcelain enamels. 27. American Ceramic Society - To dispel undue emphasis on tho toxicity of lead, we have arranged for two speakers at the annual meeting of the Ceramic Society wno will discuss the medical and engineering phases of all the variety*of toxic materials handled by the ceramic industries, 'They are Rutherford T. Johnstone, K.D., end rHlllam Hazard of (Irens-Illinois. 28. Advertising - The first ad in our new campaign directed toward painting highway structures witn red lend paints, but also embracing other types of steel structures, was prepared and will appear in the April and May issues of "Engineering News Record." This is to be based on the survey of state highway paint specification* nade by L.I..V. and found to be overwhelmingly favorable to red lead.
