Cavner Giovannelli Herndon Hinrichs Kirk Klinkhamer Leong Morgan Naegel Attached is a summary of the Carondelet Plant's 1996 Monsanto Fund Budget. The total amount reflects an increase of $5,500 from 1995. This strongly supports both our Fund objectives and community relations strategy. Our primary funding objectives are to support community organizations which: 1) Work to preserve the stability of the Carondelet neighborhood, and preserve our freedom to operate. 2) Maintain Monsanto Carondelet Plant's identity as a community resource within the Carondelet-Lemay area. Complementary Funding objectives are to: 3) Prepare the community for "worst case" scenario information, and 4) Educate our teachers and youth on chemistry and our plant's products. The organizations to which we provide support are consistent with our grantmaking theme. The Carondelet Community, while having a sense of history and intrinsic charm, is increasingly beset by the problems of urban proximity. This includes more rental housing, decay of the infrastructure, and increased crime. Further, the community continues to experience the economic hardships caused by the Flood of '93. This has exacerbated a decline in local employment opportunities, the quality of remaining single-family housing, and caused increased educational/life skills needs. Clearly, these local needs are great. Emphasized are home upkeep, self-help/life skills support, and medical services. The most important organization to which we provide Monsanto Fund grants is the Carondelet Community Betterment Federation. This group is made up and supported by most of this community's leadership; it is a diverse group and Monsanto has a strong voice within it. The Home Repair Program, which we support, assists residents by Funding repairs to meet city codes, thereby maintaining single family home ownership. Last year, about 400 homes were repaired helping many local residents stay put. This is a N.A.P. program and Monsanto gets substantial recognition for its contribution. This is the only grant above $10,000 that we request. The Director is also a member of our Community Advisory Panel. Other organizations also preserve this community by providing necessary services to enable families to maintain their livelihood and fulfill basic needs. The South City Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army provide area youth with sponsored recreational activities, educational opportunities, and activities for the elderly. The Family Care Center continues to deliver necessary medical services to positively impact this community. Grace Hill/Patch Center provides life skills training, daycare for working mothers, and food supplements. Carondelet Plant's staff serve on many of these group's boards; other plant employees participate on additional community organizations. These groups all play key roles in the community and have diverse representation. Many of our C.A.P membership also participate on these organizations' boards. By maintaining the stability of the neighborhood and with the recognition provided by our participation, MonsantoCarondelet Plant is given its freedom to operate and recognized as a community asset. Our continuing role in educating local high school youth and fence-line neighbors on our products and activities have also protected our freedom to operate our very successful business. We would be more than willing to review any aspect of this Fund Budget, local community organizations, or our community relations strategy.
