' SUBJECT . - EXXON LEXINGTON - Repairs at Newport News, VA DATE FILE NO, August 6, 1976 On July 31, 1976 Bill Ingham advised me that while the Newport News workers were working on the LF casing a workman struck an oil sight glass of the high speed pinion of the LP turbine. Some of the glass got into the bearing which necessitated removing the cover of the high-speed pinion. Upon the removal of the cover of the high-speed pinion it was observed that the coupling had several broken coupling bolts which we were not aware of and were very lucky to have found at this time as this would surely have caused a failure of the LP gears. Due to the work that is going on in the engineroom it is not thought advisable to work on the gears during the week, but we will be examining the gears and the coupling on Saturday, August 7th, and due to the findings of the LP gear coupling we are going to look at the HP high-speed pinion coupling as it has been quite a number of years since these couplings have been examined.
