P.O.-Box 427 Westfield, Hew Jersey 07090 Dear Mr. Levine: The New York Academy of Sciences has' had a continuing interest- in problems, of health hazards in the asbestos insulation Industry. Recent evidence suggests that while these hazards may be signifi cant, conversely they may be sharply reduced or eliminated by appropriate remediable measures. The Academy's Division of Environmental Sciences, is therefore con* veniag a Working Group on Insulation Industry Hygiene to consider the steps necessary to formulate an appropriate industrial hygiene program for this important Industry. Experts from Industry, Labor, Government and Academic Institutions will participate; Industry representatives will include leading executives of the Johns-Manvllle Corporation, the Owens-Coming Fiberglas Corporation, the Certain-teed Products Corporation and others as well as repre sentatives of the Quebec Mine Producers Association and the -Insula tion Distributor Contractors National Association; Labor represen tatives will include the President and appropriate staff members of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and . Asbestos Workers, while interested government agencies will include the United States Public Health Service and the United States Bureau of Mines. The Working Group will meet at the Academy on May 14, 1968 at 9 AM. It is planned that the discussions will be completed by 5:30 PM; luncheon will be served at the Academy. The Academy is honored to invite you to serve as a member of this - Working Group, and to participate in the discussions concerning the . development of a program for the removal of health hazards in the Insulation Industry. An outline is attached listing a number of areas that will be considered. Tour thoughts on these subjects will be valued, as well as on such other aspects of the question that you consider important.
