Gentlemen: Referring to your letter of December 14th, 1973 concerning the samples 3ent to The New Jersey Line Company, it would appear from our investigations that the samples were not taken from the Hot Top line supplied by Foseco as we were led to believe. The Predominant constituent found by NJZ in all samples is Wollastonite (a calciumsilicate) whereas the predominant material in the Foseco products is Olivine (magnesium silicate). The NJZ Company research people could find no evidence of lledman Cationic Fibre in any of the samples - not even in the unheated new board. In view of the foregoing and since ORF found amphibole asbestos in their part of the samples of dust and because Canadian Ferro were making their products with amphibole asbestos, and predominantly Wollastonite (calcium silicate), I can only conclude that the Ferro line was sampled. Knowing that Fosoco use predominantly Olivine and . small amounts of Hedman Cationic Fibre with no Wollastonite, I was quite shocked by the NJZ findings and had them re-do their work at considerable cost. As a result there will be a bit of a delay in us receiving the NJZ report and passing it on to you. They were positive that they couldn't make a mistake in distinguishing between calcium silicate and magnesium silicate. Though the amount of asbestos detected by ORF .in the dust samples, taken by them, was well below the pennissable levels we would expect much more favourable results had Hedman Cationic Fibre been used in the Ferro products. As you know the Hedman material contains only a trace of what authorities consider chrysotile asbestos fibers. At the low level content (4-74) of HF in the Foseco products the trace becomes an extremely insignificant trace relative to the total board and this is bonded in the board. NJZ reported under dat of November 21, 1973, per copy given to you, that the spent sample of the board vou gave us contained only Forsterite (the conversion of Hedman serpentine under high heat). J.
