DTFi; 'liCTIT CORPAFATto:;.c 1. For purposes of this study all prospective participants should be studied yearly for a minimum of 5 years, a minimum of 3,000 parsons are needed. 2. The participants should be all refinery workers under age 55 at the onset of the study in the participating oil refineries. (This assumes a usual retirement age of 60 or 62 years.) 3. The proposed study will include: a) a multiple choice history completed by the participant to .include questions concerning: 1. exertional dyspnea w* interval laicCuiOuS 3. smoking history (number of years and amounts) It. Previous industrial and Geographic exposure to asbestosis or other dusty inhalants'. The history is to be reviewed by a physician. A complete physical examination will then be performed with special emphasis on the chest, Standardised pulmonary function studies on a Fuimoncr Vital Capacity FE7, and a lV % 17" chest x-ray; A? + Lateral will be done. Any person found to have an abnormal chest x-ray and/or a vital capacity less than 85w of the predicted maximum expiratory flew rate, should be examined by a pulmonary specialist for diagnosis and possible recommended care. All subjects havinG a diagnosis of asbestosis should have an x-ray every four months instead of yearly, tp observe the progression of the disease. The overall study will be monitored by a university-connected pulmonary specialist, data collected, tabulated and a report written. The study's cost will be underwritten by the participating refineries' parent organization. N. B. 1. Controls would be refinery office workers and other nonmanual workers in a refinery population. 2.
