Inasmuch as red lead la an excellent protective naterlal for ferrous metals, we were curious to know whether the proposed investigation was de signed to Include red lead ar.ong the coatings to he tested. We were especially Interested lr. the subject as recent experimental work In California Indicated that red lead, when baked upon pipe, rakes an unusually effective pricing coat, taking seen* to prevent any possibility of chenlcal or solvent Inter'ctlon between the red lead and the secondary coal-tar or asphalt cet'rg. Open Inquiry we discovered that the test was to be conpetitlve but intended to apply only to asphaltic ar.d bituminous material*, re outlined this situation to the Directors and were authorised by then-, to eeo if, in the interests of red lead, the Lead Industrie* Association would he welcome e* a participant in the proposed in vestigation. The rational Lead Company kindly offered to place the facilities of it* Ir.boratory ar.d staff at our disposal and aaslsted greatly In subsequent developcsents. We thereupon visited Washington to persuade the Bureau of Standards and the Cos Association to enlarge the scope of its pro posed test to include red lead and although we cade our request at the elevonth hour both partlos agreed to our suggestion. Accordingly we have entered red lead In competition with nunereus other protective pipe coating materials In the Investigation mentioned above. During July and August untreated specimens of stool pips were conted at Versallloa, Fa., with coating compound* used by gee companies. In our case we decided to use two different types of coating, (a), s pricing coat of red lead baked upon the pipe, followed by an application of ar. asphaltic coating and wrap per r.anufacturcd by tho rational Tube Company, (b), a red lead coating baked upon the pipe followed by a seoondary ocetlng of e o bituslnoua material, - In this case a produot of the fallet-Dovefiemlston Company - bltur.sstlo enamel. The application of tho red led coating woa supervised by the rational Load Company, It was, of course, lmprcotlcal for ue to test every asphaltic and bitumin ous coat in conjunction with the use of red lead. Although it will take a year, or sevoral years, to determlno whether or not under tho conditions of tho tost, red lead makes tho best primer, this technical resoarch is eminently worth while because of tho large amounts of coating natorlal usod in tho United States each year and tho important new market which may beoocse, therefore, open to rod lead.
