I am .attaching a copy of a letter written to me by R. B. Davis of our Petroleum Chemi cals Division concerning these samples. From this letter you can understand the nature of the problem and the opinion desired. At your convenience will you kindly carry out a lead partition study on these samples, advising me not only of the laboratory findings, but of more importance, your opinion re garding the relative hazard the presence of such rust and scale represents in a so called "lead free" tank. Two other problems which recently confronted me and ones in which I would greatly appreciate your opinion are:- (1) What hazard if any, is represented in the contamina tion of Stoddard or Paint Solvents with lead in con centration ranging from 0.8 o.p.m. to 1.1 p.p.m.? (2) //hat hazard exists in the indoor handling of diesel fuel as well as in the usage of such diesel fuel as a stove-oil if it has been contaminated with 'TEL in the quantity of .02 c.c. per gallon of oil? I would appreciate your opinion in these matters at your earliest opportunity. However, if in your opinion these matters could be better handled by a discussion rather than correspondence, please advise and I can make arrangements to visit you. With kindest personal regards. B. L. RANKIN MEDICAL DIVISION In accordance with our conversation today we are shipping two samples of rust and scale to Dr. R. A. Kehoe at the following address:- R. A. Kehoe, M. D. Kettering Laboratory University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Bethesda & Eden Avenues Cincinnati, Ohio These samples are marked A-34. and A-37 and in addition have the identification DuPont - Dr. Rankin on the label. Both of these samples of rust and scale were taken from tanks with essentially the same history a3 follows: These tanks were cleaned to meet our definition of a lead-free tank for the purpose of entry without protective equipment. The tanks were then allowed to remain idle for approximately three months at which time they were filled with water and hammer tested. This caused rust and scale to fall from the side walls of the tank to the bottom. When the water was withdrawn it was necessary to remove this rust and scale from the bottom by means of shovels and squeegees. We ask that you have a lead partition study made using these samples and would appreciate your opinion as to whether any protection should have been used by those men who were engaged in removing this material from the tank, other than dust filters which of course, would be necessary if a dusty condition should occur when the scale or rust became dry.
