valuation of Inaulatloc Matariala
Za an attempt to arrive at a rational answer to OBtt raatrietiona on m of as bestos-centalsinglasulatlon, we reoently revised our liat of acceptable Inau lotion braada. Oar initial raraaaandationa on approved brando vaa transmitted an Soptonbor 7, 1973 in tba fora of Iranlag Ot-D-25673-O (Standard ^isolation Itnn Rtm&ers). Sinea that tine va have ran laboratory tooto on a variety of insulation braada. Aa a result, several additional insulation braada are now regarded aa acceptable. Also, we have a more rational basis upon which to v Judge relative performance and limitations of specific brands. This informa tion la ainnai liiinl in the attached Materials Laboratory report.
One additional brand of calclua silicate, Keans Coopery "Tbernaail", has been tasted and la regarded as aeeeptabla. In addition, a pearlite insulation (Cary teap 1500) has also bean evaluated and approved, this material nay be used as aa alternate to calcium allicate in the intermediate and high temperature categories. It offers tba additional advantages of batter resistance to break age, less dusting whan cut, and a higher temperature limit (1500F vs. 12007 far the calcium silicates). Although Caryteap 1500 is not specifically a calcium silicate, it is treated aa such in subsequent discussions because of the general similarity.
Rote that laboratory tests do not support the 15007 temperature limit claimed by Johns-ManviUe for their Thermo 12. All brands of asbestos-free calciias silicate should be limited to 12007 maximau This represents an increase over the HOOF temperature limit shown in QT-P-25673-0. Tests also show distinct differences in mechanical properties between the varioxs brands of calcium sill cats. It will be necessary to consider these differences in addition to coat and delivery, in arrlvii^t at a specific brand selection.
All brands of calcium silicate, and also the Carytamp 1500, are available as both block and sectional pipe insulation. However, wa should be aware that tba situation with mineral wool la acawvhat mors complicated. Mineral wool is available in four major formst
1). Block - Intended for colimn and vessel insulation.
2). Blanket - This la not covered in GT-D-25673-0. It la assumed that columns and vessels will generally not utilise blanket in sulation.

3). Preformed pip* insulation - available in Epitbsm 1200 (Eagle Pitcher Co.) only.
4). Segmental pip* Insulation - Available In MF Pip* Insulation (FartyElgbt Insulations, Inc.) only.
Hot* fra* tbe above that MF pipe lnanlatlon la nad* la eepnntal fora, and Epltbena 1200 la preformed. Thus, the two brand* of Mineral wool pip* insulatlen retain different Method* of Inatallatlcn, partlenlarly la tevaa of the v*y elbow* and other fitting* are handled.
An additional eonfhalag faster la that with Mineral wool, the wane trad* aanea are not need for block and pipe lnanlatlon. For example, Eplthem 1200 and MF pip* insulation are not available as bleak, at least under tbe sene trad* nan*. Eagle-Pitaber doe* not neks a block lnaulaticn exactly equivalent to Eplthem 1200. Forty-Eight Insulation* dose nek* a block (called 1-1200) which la roughly equivalent to tbelr HP Pipe Insulation, though it lo slightly nore dans*. Eons of tbe Mineral wool block insulations has yet been subjected to laboratory teat, but such tests will be initiated soon. So test data are pre sented on blanket insulation*. It Is generally Intended that block rather than blanket be used on colons end vessels.
W* see no lnforaatlon of real significance in the pH tests. All of the insula tions exnelned nay be regarded as acceptable in this respect.
The chloride leaching tests present a far more confusing picture. The Materials Laboratory test shewn In Colon 1 (page b) gave low chloride values. This test Involves an anblent tenperatur* water extraction, and Is 'TmnleennteTlr the test that we have applied In past years to evaluate the suitability of an Insulation for use cn stainless steel. The test used to give the results In Column 2 in volves a nitric acid extraction. We do not believe the resulting chloride con tents are relevant, except perhaps for stainless steel equipnent used In acid areas. We, therefore, tend to disregard the Colon 2 results in arriving at a general criterion far insulation selection.
The test results In Colon 3 were obtained fran a 20GF water extraction. W* re gard these results as having a practical significance, and tend to Interpret tbe results as supporting the reocanendatiou that stainless steel piping be prlned under Insulation to prevent stress corrosion cracking. However, two factors elmd the issue her*. First, test results are reported only down to a nlnines of 100 ppn chlorides. This la not sufficient accuracy far a clear evaluation. If the true value were 10 or 20 ppn ohlorlde, w* would consider it acceptable for use an stainless steel without priming. However, at ecetethlng approaching 100 ppei, we would agree that priming was necessary. A second confusing factor is that th/'ttXn* Water extraction test has never been run on the did, asbestosccntaiming grades of calcium a111cat* which we have used for years an stainless steel equipnent with Minimal difficulty. Ve need this type of lnforaatlon to PtXMlt a solid comparison of chloride content between our old and new Insulations,

One additional tut raault dmrvu careful eonoldtratloo. tf Pipe insulation (mineral wool) melted may rapidly hu exposed to a hot flaaw (about 2000T). All represents relatively poor lira roaiataaoa. On tbs basis sf tbs above lnfamatien, vo find oursalvos in tbs following posi tion:

2). Wo do not now bare any mineral vool block or blanket insolations vhleh ^ ham baa*,tostsd and approved. This leads us to lerfmiwHag only tbs calelun sllicats block insulations for rsssels, until either laboratory tests or further input fren our refineries or contractors loads us to aacsptabl# brands of mineral vool for this usage.
3). Our tendency has been to us# block rather than blanket insulation for columns and vessels, and cur Standard Drawings reflect this. With the increased use of mineral vool, ve my wish to update our position an block vs. blanket insulation. This could lead us to additional Stan dard Drawings to cover tbs alternative.
In sinnary, many insulation questions remain to be ansvered. Vs are not yet at the point where ve eon prepare an adequate insulation standard.
