It is on the far side of the river from the University, the lab, any sightseeing spots and most of the Chinese participants in the meeting. Traffic in Shanghai has become a nightmare in the last 2-3 years; to the point that bicycles have been banned from major streets. A trip from the hotel to the lab could take over an hour easy. I would counsel waiting on the other hotels on the Shanghai side of the river 1st. From checking on the web, there are, I think 2 other Marriotts in Shanghai, but I don't know the locations. There is also the Okura Garden Hotel at which I have stayed. It is very nice, a 5 star hotel , but cheaper than the Portman. Another consideration -- If we cannot find reasonable accommodations in Shanghai and IF the Shanghai contingent are not willing or able to help with finding a hotel or other assistance, then I suggest that we seriously consider approaching Dr. Greim about his offer to host in Munich. He did a really superb job with the Benzene Symposium as Lorraine and Don can attest to. If he was amenable to switching, I would strongly support that. Given Dr. Fu's recalcitrance in other areas, I would have no compunction in moving the venue for the next meeting.
