Dear Tom,
On Wednesday June lnth John Ottin^er and I attended a meetinz at Nee York University on Asbestos " An Unanticipated Envirocental Hazard*.
Attached is copy of the program and a reprint of the article that appeared in the October , 195" issue of the New Yorker Magazine.
Dr. Selikoff presented a very detailed and factual report on the
studies of the health hazards of asbestos. He has made a career in
the study of effects of asbestos and speaks eloquently about the
subjeot.
'
Dr Lee of U. S. Publio Health Service aereed wi*h Dr. Selikoff's findings. He felt that the harmful effects of asbestos fibers should be neutralized, or if this was not possible, that abeatos be taken off the market.
Mr. Hutchinson , President of Asbestos Workers Union, talked about concern of his members in the control of use of abestos and of the cooperation of his union with Dr. Selikoff.
Dr. Pundsaok, Vice President of Research & Develpment of Johns Manville, also acknjwledred the harmful e.feota of asbestos. Dr. Pundsack felt that John'a Manville had controlled the problem of asbestos in their plants thru proper ventilation and indoctrination of their employees. However the use of asbestos in construction posed another problem, parti c u l a r l y in the field of spray fireproofir end acouetloal application. Dr. Pundsaok was of the opinion this caused the greatest amount of potential hazard because the asbestos fibers were able to be air borne and thereby contaminate a large area.
Dr. Pundsaok stated the Johns Manville is working in two areas tc correct the problem. They are seeking a possible coating agent to neutralize harmful effeots of asbestos. In addition they are looking for a substitute fiber product to replace asbestos.
