At the 2009 Benzene Conference in Munich on 08 September 2009, results of case-control studies of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoid Neoplasms (NHLN) were presented. The reported results indicate an increase in the NHLN subtype follicular lymphoma (FL) in certain occupational categories associated with potential exposures to benzene. The significance of the results is uncertain due to the small number of cases associated with benzene exposure and no clear dose response with the reported exposure assessment tools. The exposure assessment is thought to be a weakness in the study. It should be noted that EPA staff member Bob Sonawane was present at the conference and that further details are expected in an upcoming publication of this work.
