MtdicaJ Director October 22, 1970 Dr. Pierluigi Viola 57013 Rosignano (Livorno) Rome, Italy Dear Dr. Viola: On a recent trip to Paris, I had an opportunity to talk with Dr. Aonzo about his discussions with you concerning the cancer studies on vinyl chloride, and I was especially pleased to have your, letter today dealing with this same subject. There are a number of individual companies, as well as indus trial organizations in the United States, who are concerned with vinyl chloride and any toxic properties that it might have. The Manufacturing Chemists Association, through its Committee on Occupational Health, has coordinated studies on health problems related to the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride. This committee is now much interested in the studies done at the Cancer Institute in Rome. It is quite likely that some similar research may be sponsored by industries in this country and in this event, I think that your suggestion for communications between you and your associates and whatever labora tory that would undertake this work would be highly desirable. In fact, when a decision has been made for such studies and an appropriate labora tory selected, I think it would be highly desirable to establish communica tions at an early date so that there might be possibility of coordination of efforts and information between these organizations. I would rather comment on the desirability for such a committee at a later date when we know more about research that might be initiated here in the States. In any event, I certainly agree with your concept of developing and maintaining good communications and I shall be happy to assist in bringing this about. I want to thank you for your letter and for your cooperation in disussing this work with Dr. Aonzo and making available to him certain information which he has been kind enough to send to me.
