The vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) monitoring procedure, based on charcoal tube absorption of ambient air samples, was checked out at Avon Lake during March, 1974 This included the difficult problems of recovering VCM from the charcoal and analy zing it. The results of this scries of tests have been known in part and used in various meetings. However, the data has never been formally reported for company records. This report represents such a compilation, the information being assembled in four tables. I wish to call attention to several general conclusions and comments which we reached from these studies. 1) The processing operations checked indicate only minimal VCM levels (Table 3). 2) VCM exposures to B/451 and 461 are higher than in B/464; B/463 shows the lowest levels of the four Poly buildings. 3) HRC operators and poly cleaners in general appear to be exposed to higher VCM levels than the rest of the operating personnel. More recently, these exposures have been decreased by precautionary procedures employed after the polys have been opened for cleaning. It should be recognized that this was early work which has-been greatly improved upon through experience.
