STANDARDS SECTION - SAFETY AND FIRE PROTECTION SUBCOMMITTEE MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1900 AT 9:00 A.M. IN ROOM 13418, NEMOURS BUILDING APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the last meeting were approved. NOTE: Following are the dates agreed to for the next 3 meetings: September 27 November 1 November 29 (No change) (Was October 25) (Was November 22) 1. 1967 WORK FORECAST The following item was added to the list prepared last month: Trailers used as temporary offices (new) This may be developed in conjunction with appropriate A&C subcommittees. 2. ELECTRIC FORK TRUCKS The Chairman reported that he had received a reply from Under writers' Laboratories stating in effect that since our comments applied to trucks which were several years old. Underwriters' Laboratories felt they could take no action. C. Holder agreed to locate through Purchasing a recently purchased Type EE truck and have it' checked against Underwriters' Laboratories' specification. SETTER THINGS fOR SETTER LIVING . . . MacLean, Chambers Works, pointing out that this subcommittee agrees with the use of the Type EE truck as permitted in Specification SV2A. 3. S12G - LABORATORY DESIGN CRITERIA It was reported that J. D. Wilson has promised a revised draft by October 30. 4. F20E - DEPTH OF COVER FOR OUTSIDE UNDERGROUND FIRE MAINS This revised standard was approved for issue. 5. FIPC - FIRE HOSE COUPLING SPECIFICATION It was agreed to omit Bellewood, Cooper River, F & F Warehouses, and Wyandotte. Tulsa will be added. This standard was approved for issue. 6. F9G ~ SOLVENT DISPENSING ROOM Recommendations to change Par. 6.1 and add a new Par. 6.2 submitted by W. G. Ridley, June 27 > 1966, were discussed at length. The subcommittee disagreed with these recommendations and concluded that no change should be made in the standard. 7.' S2H - RESPIRATORY PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT F. T. Bodurtha is scheduled to report in September. 8. SIOF - METAL SCAFFOLDS S7F - SCAFFOLD PLANK K. E..Keuper is scheduled to report in September. 9. PROTECTION OF OPENINGS IN FIRE WALLS Due from A&C in October. 10. S25B - BARRICADES FOR PROCESS EQUIPMENT It was suggested that some information be included on the use of blasting mats such as were used at Louisville. H. Lewis will contact F. A. Loving and F. M. Willis for their comments and will reply to the comments received from R. P. Delano. Discussion will be continued. 11. F6J - FLAMMABLE VAPOR AND GAS DETECTORS Deferred due to the absence of W. S. Kiser. 12. S1H - AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS FOR AIR MASKS to. A. Bower reported that he will have a revised draft before the next meeting. He plans to include information regarding use of portable compressor,filters, etc. This should satisfy the request made by the Protective Coatings Subcommittee for information on air supplied to sand blasting hoods. 13. S1E - SAFETY SHOWERS C. R. Groves asked that this be deferred until next month. 14. F7H - EMERGENCY SHUTOFF FOR GAS SUPPLY LINES E. A. Farrell, Jr. to K. E. Keuper. a. Lubricating oils - the subcommittee objected to including this service due to the potential fire hazard should a leak occur. b. Brine - Approved. c. Air, increased limits of 150 psi/220*F - Approved. d*. Inert gas, increased limits 150 psi/l50F - Approved. 17. HEAT VENTS FOR FIRE C. Holder had no report. # 3.8. F18B - FIRE DAMPERS FOR DUCTS [ E. A. Tschopp had no report. 19. FID - FIRE PUMPS E. A. Tschopp had no report. 2. S2T - THRESHOLD LIMIT VALUES F. *2. Bodurtha reviewed with subcommittee members the importance of reporting TLV data which can be used by ACGIH as a basis for establishing threshold limit values. This is particularly important in those cases where Du Pont feels that the TLV presently is too low. 21. F4H - FLAMMABLE LIQUID STORAGE TANKS . C. R. Groves submitted a revision clarifying the definition of gravity flow. This was approved for issue. 22. B2W - FIXED LADDERS A. J. Schwertfeger, Explosives Department, brought to the.sub committee's attention the fact that the standard B2W does not limit the straight, unbroken length of fixed ladders while ASA standard A14.3 - 1956 - requires in Far. 6.2 "When ladders are used to ascend to heights exceeding 20 feet, (except on chimneys) landing platforms should be provided for each 30 feet cf height or fraction thereof... Each ladder section should be offset from adjacent sections." Although the subcommittee members do not believe that our present practices constitute any particular hazard, they did question the legal implications, particularly since many local ' or state codes could probably incorporate ASA Al4.3*By a copy of
