Gustin-Bacon Mfg, Company NIMA PROPOSED REVSIONS TO FEDERAL SPECIFICATION FOR INSULATION. BLOCK k PIPE, THERMAL, CALCIUM SILICATE (HH-I-523) This specification was discussed with regard to the philosophy of classifying pipe insulation with regard to jackets, with three suggestions as follows: 1. A basic material specification with a supplementing jacket specifica tion. This suggestion was the least favored as two basic documents would be needed to order material. 2. A basic material specification with the jacket information contained within the specification. 3. A basic material specification with the pipe insulation classified as to jackets. c 2 The third suggestion seamed to be slightly more in favor with the Govern ment Agencies than the others. NIMA will consider these suggestions and submit a proposed revision to HH-I-523 to GSA sometime in February, 1964. INTERIM FEDERAL SPECIFICATIONS, INSULATION, THERMAL, MINERAL FIBER (FOR ELEVATED TEMPERATURES) and (FOR LOW TEMPERATURES), HrM-00558 and HH-I-00559 The specifications which were promulgated by GSA from drafts prepared by NIMA were discussed. The specs combine 5 existing Federal Specifications into two specifications. Section 12: pages 40,41, Maritime Administration Basic Specification for Cargo Ship Construction (Keating ard Ventilating Section) 1. U, S, Coast Guard requirements for incombustible materials precludes use at material meeting MIL-1-742, Type Q and Class 5 at MIL-1-22023, and MIL-I-22344. Specifications for one ship are being revised using trade names of materials listed under 164,009 of the U, S, Coast Guard Equipment List, 2. Maritime Administration eras asked to consider the folloering: a. Fermitn use of molded type insulation on round ducts in addition to blanket types, b. Need for full coverage of adhesive application to duct surface. c. Review section on round duct concerned with use of staples as means of fastening. 2 d, Mike more specific reference to suitable type* of cloth uced for finishing, (Asbestos or glass) e. Review requirement specifying 2" overlap of cloth or tape and consider 1" minimum overlap, f. Future specifications should reference government and A5TM specifications rather than trade names, (N1MA is asked to comment on specifications in this manner), g, Investigate need for coat of adhesive between cloth lagging and insulation surface. Manufacturers to work with Benjamin Foster to determine this need and submit to Maritime for evaluation, 3, Government T fc R Group will provide a recommendation on Section 12 to NIMA, Maritime Administration will provide a proposed basic specification for discussion purposes, 4, Government T it R Group asks NIMA T It R Committee to review section 4.2.5 of Maritime Spec, 32-MA-3b, Vibration Test, Suggestion made to compare this test with MIL-Std^l67. B. .Coast Guard Requirements for Ull and Pipe Insulation Aboard Ships, 1, Coast Guard reviewed need for incombustible materials in service areas and accommodation spaces for passengers and crew in passenger, cargo and tank vessels. December 4, 1963 Joint Afternoon Seeeion In addition to those attending the morning sessions the following was in attendancs: C. J. Henrdickson M. H. Detrick Company The items that were discussed in the Land Session It Marine Session that were held in the morning were outlined. COSTS OF TESTING It was reported that many of the manufacturers thought that ths repeated testing of materials that was required under several specifications was unnecessary and that the costs of this testing were passed on to the agencies buying the material. It was believed that a modified QFL plan* manufacturer's certification and/or an NIMA sponsored certification program would help alleviate this problem* CONSISTENCY TEST (ASTM C 405) A manufacturer reported that tests he conducted in his laboratory seemed to indicate that the ASTM Methof of Test for Consistency (ASTM C 405) of thermal insulating cements did not give consistent results. It was reported that the ASTM C-16 Subcommittee responsible for this test method bad investigated this subject and come to the conclusion that the test method was valid. FUTURE AGENDAS Subjects to be included on future agendas are: 1. HH-I-561 - Insulations, Block It Pipe Covering* Thermal (Asbestos for Tsmperatures up to 1200F). 2. Description and terminology pertaining to jackets. \ 2 3. Standard canvas (minimum weight) jackets in government specifications. 4. Premolded duct systems b duct insulations. 5.
