This is to acknowledge your memo of'February 25 relative to the subject compound. Asbestos has long been recognised as a Material which if inhaled over a long enough period of tins and in significantly heavy concen trations in air can and has produced serious pulmonary disability. The subject has received renewed attention on the part of industrial physicians and industrial hygienists and an International conference was held last year in Hew York. The evaluation of the work conditions under which the subcontractor is handling this product can best be ascertained by observing the work conditions and the source of the asbestos. However .as a general precaution in any spraying operation we believe that the use of a respiratory device should be a m i n i m a requirement. Therefore, until we have an opportunity to evaluate this potential problem with more Information and/or by observing the operation, we would suggest that the sprayers involved be provided with respirators approvet by the USBM for pneumoconiosis-producing dust.
