I. Purpose
To establish standards for respiratory equipment and specify procedures for protecting the respiratory systems of employees performing work in areas where possible health hazards may exist,
II. Procedure
A. Health Hazards
a. Approved respiratory protection will be worn by employees whenever they are required to work in areas which are nonventilated and where health hazards may exist, such as the following examples:
Dusts
Vapors
Fumes
Gases
Metal Paint pigments Plastics Silica Wood Fiberglass Radioactive Dust
Acids Caustics Degreasers Organic
Acids Caustics Cements Cleaners
Engine fuels Metal
Paint fumes Sealers Solvents
Carbon Monoxide Fire extinguishers Natural Refrigerants Sewer Welding
(The above examples are only a few of the hazardous materials which may be encountered.)
b. Whenever there is any doubt as to whether respiratory protection is needed, or as to the material which is causing the hazard, consult the Safety Engineering Section.
B. Equipment Standards
a. Only U. S. Bureau of Mines approved respiratory pro tective equipment will be used at all Bell Helicopter Company facilities.
C. Issue and Service of Equipment
a. Respiratory protective equipment, including filters and other parts, will be issued by the Tool Cribs only upon written request from a supervisor stating for what purpose it is to be used (i.e., toxic material encountered).
