Foundation, Next month, this Foundation will solicit industry support for a 3-year program of investigation at #300,000 per year. You will recall that we are no longer committed to support any particular study in this field. However, we should presumably go along with other local industry in any worthwhile community effort. There is a good deal of feeling that industry would be well advised to get some reliable technical data on air pollution and its effects in this area, in anticipation of future problems. The request for support will be made sometime in January. You will receive a copy of any material that is sent to the principal executive of your firm. Mailings of the minutes of our last meeting have been held until material relative to the Foundation's program was available. A delay at the printer's has made it. impossible to give you the brochure 'which will accompany the request for financial assistance. We are substituting, therefore, a News Release which covers some of the pertinent facts about the Foundation's program.' If you have any questions don't hesitate to call our office. Mueller The Secretary opened the meeting and explained the past history of the International Air Pollution Study proposed last year by the United States Public Health Service, the Michigan State Health Department .and the City of Detroit. Industry has been asked to support the sir-sampling stations as their contribution toward the area-wide Health Study, Industry formally declined this invitation to participate in October, 1953. Since that time the City of Detroit has carried on a pilot program considerabl reduced in scope. The National Sanitation Foundation has evidenced an interest in sponsoring a program which would study problems of an environmental health nature in the Detroit area. One of the projects considered to be important was a study similar to the one -advanced originally by the governmental agencies. Inasmuch as funds have not been made available to the public agencies to carry cut this study, it was thought the National Foundation could solicit funds adequate to implement the program. **r. Warren introduced Dr. William G. Fredrick and H. William Klare, Trustees of the National Sanitation Foundation., Dr. Fredrick reviewed the National Sanitation Foundation's interest in conducting such a study in cooperation with the various public agencies concerned. He indicated that Mayor Cobo had shown considerable interest in the study and has offered the National Sanitation Foundation quarters at Herman Kiefer Hospital. He then gave a tentative program of what such a study would cost over a tbiree-year period. The National Sanitation Foundation is a non-profit organization set up to do research for industry groups on problems related to public health. It will concern Itself with problems in the Detroit area. There were a number of questions asked of Dr. Fredrick and Mr. Warren with respect to the type of study, the relationship to public agencies, and other pertinent matters relative to the National Sanitation Foundation's program. Mr. Warren agreed to send a copy of the letter from the National Sanitation Foundation asking support of their program to the principal executives of over 200 Detroit industrial concerns. Other material related to the Foundation's program will also be sent to the Air Pollution Group. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 3:45 P.M. dd KE 0018497
