A formal respiratory program is needed to insure that the protection offered is actually being achieved. The following steps are guidelines for a minimal acceptable program, 1 _ I I. A written operating procedure which accounts for identification of the hazard, selection of the appropriate respirator, and which outlines the responsibilities and duties of personnel in the format of the following program. II. A training program which identifies the hazard and its proper ties and trains employees irf the use and limitations of the respirator. III, A method in which employees are each assigned, an individual respirator. k IV. A reRulat schedule of disinfecting (destruction of microorganisms or viruses that cause disease) che respirators, Hopefully, this should be done daily. w `-Respirators should be stored in a convenient, clean, and sanitary location. VI. The respirators should be routinely inspected for worn or deteri orated parts. This should be done before and after each use. A' log should be kept of all maintenance or repairs made. VII. A periodic surveillance should be made to insure employees are actually using these devices, that thev fit correctly, and there are no new processes that may also require protection. VIII. The medical, condition of employees wearing respirators should he known. An appropriate pre-placement physical and/qr questionnaire should be used. IX. An evaluation of thia program should be conducted to insure that :-;.j'f:. all phases are being performed.
