We received these from Jim O'Gara. I do not know whether these are the only copies that exist, but they appear to be copies of originals. As we have discussed, some of the historical material here places the actions of the company in the early 1970s in proper context and can be helpful in litigation. The claim by plaintiffs in the Dettinger case was that Dr. Viola found that laboratory animals got cancer from exposure to VCM in 1970, and the companies did nothing to lower the level of residual vinyl chloride or place a warning label on their PVC products until 1974. The materials in these boxes, particularly the CMA Vinylchloride Subcommittee notes, indicate the careful research that was being done at the time, the fact that vinyl chloride was previously thought to be essentially harmless except for the explosive hazard, and the fact that Dr. Viola's research was done at exceedingly high levels of exposure. Thus, the normal level of exposures to which most workmen were exposed simply were not thought to be in the range known to be harmful. ucc 040726 know.
