Dear Leila,
World oil demand has reached record highs, and so has U.S. production. According to the latest data, global demand is approaching 100 million barrels per day (MBD) for the first time ever. Meanwhile, U.S. crude oil production reached a new all-time high of 10.6 MBD in May - up more than 2.0 MBD from the same time last year.
In other words, the world needs energy, and we have it.
It's an ideal position to occupy - with positive implications for consumer budgets, economic growth and U.S. security. As API Chief Economist Dean Foreman explains: "Every barrel produced at home adds to the global oil supply, whether it is consumed here or abroad. And domestic oil prices have remained lower than international ones as a result. The more we add, that improves our chances of putting downward pressure on prices at the pump."
That's the good news. The troubling news is that the Trump administration's tariff policies jeopardize U.S. natural gas and oil production - and the broader economy.
Like countless other essential industries, the U.S. natural gas and oil industry cannot operate without steel. We use it to manufacture drilling components that produce energy, build pipelines that transport it and operate refineries that convert it to a host of valuable products.
In many cases, the industry requires specialty steel components that are just not produced in the U.S. in sufficient quantities, if at all. Imposing a 25 percent tariff on steel supplied by allies - including top economic partners like Canada, Mexico and the European Union - makes obtaining vital resources vastly more expensive at best, impossible at worst. For instance, in the case of allies that have accepted quotas as an alternative to tariffs, steel and aluminum components won't be available at any price once we reach the pre-determined quota.
Beyond threats to the availability of specific products, White House policy threatens trade relationships that are critical to U.S. economic success. Free trade between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico helps support over 10 million jobs here at home. New tariffs imposed on trade with China add to the problem - potentially placing the costs of China's market-distorting behavior on U.S. consumers and their access to affordable and reliable energy.
These serious trade missteps could undermine American jobs and America's leadership role on the global energy stage. It's imperative that the administration not only implement an efficient, sensible exclusion process - and approve natural gas and oil industry exclusion petitions for essential steel and aluminum products - but also reconsider trade policies that undermine U.S. competitiveness.
Trade wars with key trading partners will be detrimental to the U.S. economy and consumers.
Sincerely, Jack N. Gerard President & CEO API
Natural Gas: Continuing Progress on Cutting Emissions
Methane emissions from natural gas production are down 14 percent since 1990, while natural gas output increased more than 50 percent over the same period. At the same time, increased use of natural gas is the chief reason U.S. carbon dioxide emissions are at 25-year lows - providing Americans with the cleanest air in years as well as a number of economic benefits. Learn more about the benefits of natural gas and the industry's commitment to environmental progress.

Leila, per our discussions, we would be pleased to have Secretary Zinke deliver Opening Remarks at the Friday, June 29 keynote session for the upcoming
World Gas Conference. Secretary Zinke's remarks
would be prior to a panel discussion entitled,
"Innovation to Drive the Energy Industry Forward."
The entire focus of our Friday session (s) relates to the opportunity for innovation to drive the natural gas industry forward over the coming decades. All of our keynote sessions and through our closing luncheon session are really focused on the future and what happens next.
Secretary Zinke is being asked to deliver 10 minutes of remarks, at 8:30 am, prior to a panel discussion taking
place. The Secretary would not be expected to be part of the panel, and he would be able to leave the Convention Center immediately after his remarks, should he so desire. He is likewise welcome to stay as along as he would like.
We believe that Secretary Zinke would be uniquely positioned to focus on the innovative aspects of the US gas industry; innovations which have taken the industry from a position of potentially becoming one
of the world's largest importers of natural gas (pre
2008 focus on shale gas development) to a position as
potentially one of the world's largest exporters of
natural gas (thanks to the recently realized and discovered abundance of natural gas in the US). Clearly, the innovations developed by the US gas industry have been critical in making this incredible transformation of the industry.
With the panel following the Secretary focused on innovative aspects in a wide variety of areas, not always totally related to the gas industry, we believe
that Secretary Zinke's remarks would really set the
stage for understanding the role that natural gas, and
in particular US natural gas, can play in "driving the energy industry forward."
I hope this is helpful and will help in convincing Secretary Zinke that the opportunity to speak at the first World Gas Conference in the United States in 30 years is a unique one. It will be decades before this event returns to the United States.
Thanks for your help. Please let me know if you have any questions.
All the best,
Jay

Hi Sarah! What's the best number to reach you at since you're now in DC? I'm hoping to to set up a time to advance Secretary Zinke's speech. I also need to discuss with someone his role at the conference. You have him listed as a panelist on your website which needs to be corrected. Who can help me with this?

the CWC group. Sarah is based in London, but will soon be in DC for the duration. Sarah is handling all things related to the keynote speakers. Am also copying two of her colleagues, who are responsible for the event
logistics -- Alice Murrie and Kayleigh Kowalewski. Both Alice and
Kayleigh are already onsite in DC, and I know they met with Secretary
Perry's team today.
Lastly, I am including George Lowe and Allison Cunningham with the American Gas Association.
Sarah/Alice/Kayleigh will get back to you shortly, but Sarah is on a 5 hour time differential right now, so it will probably be tomorrow morning, although at this point, she may be still working tonight.
Thanks again for this great news.

Hi Jay! Thanks for your patience. We're confirmed for June 29th at 8:30am. Do you have a security contact that I can pass onto the Secretary's security detail? And who would be the logistics contact for me to work with moving forward? Thank you!

Leila, per our discussions, we would be pleased to have Secretary Zinke deliver Opening Remarks at the Friday, June 29 keynote session for the
upcoming World Gas Conference. Secretary Zinke's remarks would be prior to a panel discussion entitled, "Innovation to Drive the Energy Industry Forward." The entire focus of our Friday session (s) relates to
the opportunity for innovation to drive the natural gas industry forward over the coming decades. All of our keynote sessions and through our closing luncheon session are really focused on the future and what happens next.
Secretary Zinke is being asked to deliver 10 minutes of remarks, at 8:30 am, prior to a panel discussion taking place. The Secretary would not be expected to be part of the panel, and he would be able to leave the Convention Center immediately after his remarks, should he so desire. He is likewise welcome to stay as along as he would like.
We believe that Secretary Zinke would be uniquely positioned to focus on the innovative aspects of the US gas industry; innovations which have taken the industry from a position of potentially becoming one of the
world's largest importers of natural gas (pre 2008 focus on shale gas development) to a position as potentially one of the world's largest
exporters of natural gas (thanks to the recently realized and discovered abundance of natural gas in the US). Clearly, the innovations developed by the US gas industry have been critical in making this incredible transformation of the industry.
With the panel following the Secretary focused on innovative aspects in a wide variety of areas, not always totally related to the gas industry, we
believe that Secretary Zinke's remarks would really set the stage for
understanding the role that natural gas, and in particular US natural gas,
can play in "driving the energy industry forward."
I hope this is helpful and will help in convincing Secretary Zinke that the opportunity to speak at the first World Gas Conference in the United States in 30 years is a unique one. It will be decades before this event returns to the United States.
Thanks for your help. Please let me know if you have any questions.
All the best,
Jay
