MEMORANDUM to lT.r. EMPLOYEES
October 10, 1986
lSallPLAlNTlff'S flSWRG^Blfe;
During the tin* we were making preparations to move
into the Headquarters facility, we discovered fireproofing
material containing some asbestos on the ceiling of the stor
age area adjacent to the mail room on the basement level. Two
tests of the air quality in this area were subsequently con
ducted. Both tests indicated that .001 asbestos fibers per
cubic centimeter were present in the air, which is 100 time*
less than federally-mandated safety standards.
In addition to these two tests, v* recently hadGrace's Health and Toxicology department visit the Headquar ters facility to further ensure that the fireproofing material presented no health risks. The tests confirmed that the fire proofing material, which contains approximately 15 percent a& bestos, poses no significant hazards for people working in the storage area and no hazards whatsoever for those individuals working in other parts of the building. According to Grace's Health and Toxicology department, "Exposure to the fireproofing material for several years would result in a risk level roughly coevarable to smoking between one cigarette and one pack of cigarettes in a lifetime."
Shortly we will begin construction of the cafeteria, which will be adjacent to the mail room/storage area. We are concerned that since this material is extremely friable, it may

As a result, we are taking measures to have the material removed prior to any construction work. The removal will only be done by vendors licensed by the state to remove asbestoscontaining material. If there are any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to call or see me.
