Biotechnology Innovation Organization
President & CEO
March 16, 2017
The Honorable Scott Pruitt Administrator Environmental Protection Agency 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20460
Dear Administrator Pruitt:
I would like to request a meeting with you for the afternoon of April 4, 2017, with members of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization's (BIO) Board of Directors. Board members from across BIO's industry sectors will be in Washington, D.C., at that time to participate in BIO's Annual Legislative Day Fly In and would appreciate greatly the opportunity to discuss concrete ways in which our industry can help President Trump achieve our shared policy goals and encourage the continued growth and success of the biotechnology industry.
BIO is the world's largest association representing the interests of the biotechnology community, with over 1,000 members that range from small start-up companies to Fortune 50 companies, and include academic research institutes, life science investors, and state and regional economic development organizations in 46 states and Puerto Rico. Our members are at the cutting edge of technological invention that is helping to cure the most serious diseases, secure U.S. energy independence through renewable sources, sustainably feed a growing world while raising farm incomes, and address our most challenging national security problems - including global food security, biodefense, and pandemic preparedness.
Biotechnology companies are overwhelmingly small start-ups and early-stage companies. The biosciences field employs 1.66 million American workers directly and supports 7.5 million additional U.S. jobs, including many in the agricultural, renewable energy, and bio-based product sectors that help fuel America's rural economy. From 2001-2014, total U.S. bioscience employment increased 9.7%, compared to 5.4% in the overall private sector - reflecting a strongly growing part of the American economy.
These impressive economic impact numbers are dependent on good public policy. In your role, you will be at the center of important policy debates impacting the progress of biotechnology, including the future of regulations impacting agricultural biotechnology and the Renewable Fuel Standard. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss these topics with you and your relevant staff.
