Babcock & Wilcoi Co named W H Rowand chief engineer at a recant board of director# meeting. The position la a new one created hjr the promotion of Alfred Idrflea to presidency of the eompeny (Power, May 1948, p 132). Rowand will assume most ol the engineering activities previously handled by lddlea.
Rowand haa hecn with B & W for 19 yeara. He atudied mechanical engineering at Cornell University, cleu <( 1929, and .taler carried out poit-graduate work at Columbia Univeraity. During his years with the company, Rowand haa aerved in many engineering capacities and has been active in design and development of boilers. He is the author of a number of technical papers and is prominent in Metropolitan Section of American Society of Mecltanieal Engineers.
Nlogarn Hudson Power Corp haa an* nounced plana for immediate eipansion of a ateam eleciric-genernling development at Dunkirk, N. Y, to a 2-unit tiaiion with .a total capacity of 160,000 kw. The first BO.OOO-kw unit, on which construction has already been started by fliifTaln Niagara Electric Corp, NffP subsidiary, fa sched uled in be completed by the fall of 1950. Two other units are being considered. The Dunkirk development is perl of a 5-year, 1125,000,000 construction program under taken by Niagara Hudson to meet future needs of customers and provide more re serve capacity.
Two other steam electric-generating units at the system's Buffalo and Oswego plants are scheduled to add 160,000 kw to the system's power production late In 1948, Orders have also been plaeed for five new getieratnrt with a total capacity of 37,500 kw for Schoellkopf hydroelectric station at Niagara Falls.
Projects under way and on order will add more than 350,000 kw to the system's powH-prnduciiig resources.
