Close off liquid line on rack as soon as liquid starts to discharge from the vent tube. f. Close off vapor return line on rack and liquid* and vapor loading valveson car. ! Remove thermometer from well and quickly read temperature. b. Insert temperature on R-84. NOTEs The Shipping Department may require a temperature when car is about half full. In such cases take temperature and phone to office.. If the temperature on the car at the half way point is lower or higher than the Shipping Department used to figure the _ outage gauge* the contents of ' the car will have to be re - figured and the outage gauge changed on R-84.10 10. Moisture Test , After the car is loaded and depending on customer specifications* it may be re quired to test for moisture by the cobalt bromide method to be sure the product is satisfactorily dry before shipment. If the test shows that the L.P.G. is web* it may often be dried by venting for a few minutes. If ear remains wet after venting for a reasonable length of time* notify your supervisor. As an example, the DuPont standard instructions require washing the tank car with gasoline after the car is unloaded. Here at Puget Sound we will not wash the car with gasoline and will return same to DuPont containing a small amount of TEL which will be credited the refin ery. This is in accord with special instructions from DuPont. Regulations are posted at TEL plant governing the handling of Tetraethyl Lead Compounds. o, Prepare to Unload Car a.. Place blue flag on track at South end of car. b. Set brakes on car. c. Check weigh tank in lead room and be sure there is ample room to re ceive the contents of the car. d. . Change to white clothing provided for wear while unloading TEL. e. Put on protective gloves and have gas mask ready, f. Break seal on dome and remove cover. g. If any TEL fluid has leaked into dome from car, let car stand and report this to your foreman AT ONCE. This is to slow down the lead leaving the car and will give the inside walls of the car a longer period to drain off any TEL into the small amount re maining before ear goes on air. 5, Disconnect Hose a. When car goes on air, gauge will show slight decrease in vacuum on eductor manifold, indicating that air is passing from the car. b. Install vacuum gauge on vent nozzle. c. Allow vacuum to build to approximately 5", (Car must have a minimum of 3" of vacuum when shipped,) d. Close valve on weigh tank. e. Close vent on car, and at same time . close valve on end of unloading hose, f. Close unloading valve on car. g. Disconnect unloading hose and re place blinds on end of hose and over discharge valve on car. h. Remove gauge and plug nozzle. i. Replace dome cover. J. Shut down eductor pump, k. Close all lineups. However* it will be necessary at times to "Hand Gauge" in order to check the automatic equipment. Hand gauging is also required when receiving foreign crude both by tanker and pipe line* and in special cases on finished products. 2. Definition . The term gauging' includes the measure ment of the height of the oil surface above the tank bottom* the amount of water at the bottom* and the tempera ture of the oil. 3. -The Tape " The steel tape used generally is marked in feet* inches and eighths of Inches. It is wound on a hand reel. A brass plumb bob Is fastened with a snap to the bottom of the tape. Inage Gauge a. Ground body by firmly grasping the steel hand rail or touching the roof of the tank with the bare hand. b. Remove gauge hatch slowly and stand to windward* in order to avoid breathing escaping vapors. c. Wipe tape clean and lower into tank until tape gauge lightly touches bottom of tank. The steel tape should touch the side of the gauge hatch at all times* bo as to avert formation of static electricity* which may Ignite vapors in tank. d. Rewind tape until oil level marking on tape is brought up out of tank. Ullage gauge is taken exactly the same as the inage gauge, however, the empty space in the tank is recorded instead of the amount of product. b,, Ullage gauges are used on tankers. To Water Gauge (Thief) a. Coat tape or thief rod with approved water detector paste. b. Lower tape or thief rod to bottom of tank. c. Hold tape or rod motionless for a few seconds (longer in heavy oil), then withdraw. ! General Information Pump rods on reciprocating pumps and some shafts on centrifugal pumps and mixers pass through packing material . secured by packing glands much the same as valve stems, Leaks around the stem or shaft will occur as wear on the packing increases This must be stopped to prevent waste and a potential source of fire. To do this, normally, a degree of snugging up on the packing gland is required. If this does not stop the leak, re port It to the Pumper. 2. Adjust Packing a. With a suitable wrench or other tool, pull the packing gland snug a thread at a time = till desired result is obtained. b. Check operation for 5 minutes by carefully placing bare hand, against packing gland. If un comfortable to the touch, the gland is too tight, causing heating which may result in damage to the parts or may. In extreme cases, cause a fire. If the packing is too tight, loosen the packing aB it was tightened that is, one thread at a time and check for heating as before. General Information The 6" slop oil line system is actually - a gathering system with many connections and used for many purposes. Sections of this line are insulated while others are not, so it is well to remember that if it Is used for the transfer of heavy oils, it must be flushed out as soon as . possible after the movement. The original purpose of this system was to transfer recovered oil from the Effluent Plant to Tanks 12 & 13 or to the Crude tanks; or from Tanks 12 and 13 to the Slop tanks at the Effluent Plant, Two slop pumps (21N-G4 and 21N-G7) are so manifolded that they can take suc tion on the two slop tanks or any one of the three FC Chg. tanks. The dis charge from these pumps terminate at the crude tanks (via 16" T/M system) another section extends to the Blending Plant where it branches. One of these extends to the Effluent Plant, the other terminates at the Receiver Trap at the Dock, (See Slop System Drawing In RP&S Lines & Manifold Book.) At the termination of the delivery to any tank you will he required to pull the samples and deliver them to the Laboratory. A manifest will he sent to the Blending Plant prior to each Trans-Mountain de livery giving rates and timing. Each division on the time selector rep resents 1 hour and cannot be set for over 24 hours.
