SIM > An Evidemiotogic Mortaity Study of Employees at the Chemolite Pant
"This isthe original retrospective cohort mortality reportof employees at the Chemolite Plant in Cottage Grove, Minnesota conducted by Schuman and Mandelofthe University ofMinnesota. Summary results were cited by Ubel et al (se study # 1). A review of personnel records indicated there were 3688 workers employed for a least 6 months between 1947 and 1978. Vital status was ascertained through 1978. The results of this analysis revealed no significant findings. The authors reported that a number of SMR's, particularly forthe cancers, did exceed the null value but were not statistically significant. Therefore they recommended continued updating ofthe vital statusof this cohort. tis important to note that line by line abstraction of work history cards was not done in the original study; rather only the date of first employment at Chemie, last date of employment at Chemolite, and period ofemployment in the Chemical Divisionof the Chemolite plant were abstracted. Individual jobs and departments were not abstracted. This original data file was subsequently used for two updates (see studies #3 and #4). However, in the ongoing retrospective cohort mortality study ofthis Cottage Grove workforce (scheduled for completion by September 2000), the entire work history record has been abstracted and will be used to construct an exposure matrix related to perfluorooctanoic acid

An Eptdentologtc Mortality Study of Esployees at the Chenolite Plant
tncroduction A retrospective cohort mortality seudy of esployees at the Chemolite
Plane in Cottage Grove, Minnesota vas conducted. ALL employees who had worked at least six sonche at the Plant vere included in the study. The baste objectives of the study vere twofold:
1. To determine vhether the mortality experience of employees at the Chesolite Plant vas significantly different from that expected in population group of this demographic composition. 2. To decernine vhether the morcalicy expertence of employees fn the Cheteal Division of the Chemclite Plant vas significantly different fron that expected. Methods ALL employee records for all divisions of the Chesolite Plant are stored in a central location (Personnel Office). The personnel recordkeeping syscen has been designed so that complece rcords have been maintained on all enployees who ever worked at the Chemolite Plant. These records are also nsintained for employees vho transfer vithin the JN Corporation. Thus, tn constructing the study cohort ft vas assumed that a cosplete roster could be assesbled of all enployees vho ever worked at the Chemolite Plant since its opentng 10 1947. A careful review of the personnel records indicated that a total of 4218 hat been employed at Chemolite for some period of time since 1947. Of these, 1688 vere employed for at least 6 months. This group comprised

For each individual the folloving information vas coded onto Fortran costa sheets:

Security Administration (SSA) to ascertain those individuals vho had

A otal of 180 deaths vere ascertained froo SSA records. For each
each the state of last residence, the state of last employment, of the
state from vhich the benefit vas filed along vith the date of death
was listed. This fnformation vas used to obtain a copy of the deach
cereificate for ech decedent. Unfortunately, since the most vical
piece of inforsation - state in Vhich the death occurred = vas not pro-
vied by the SSA, acquisition for all death cercificates vas a foratdsble
cask. For those deaths for vhich a death cerciticate vas not available from
the state of last residence, the state of last esployment, of the state

social security number, birthdate, date of death) on all deaths for which
the death certificate vas not acquired by any of the sbove mentioned
methods vas sent to the Wisconsin Health Department to determine if a
death certificate vas on file in their records.
UEt1zing these procedures, 168 of the 180 (33.3%) death certificates
vere acquired. Inforaation on the remaining tvelve vith a request for a
copy of the death certificate vas sent to every state health department
