PVC MANUFACTURING WASTE MINIMIZATION
During the recent Health, Safety, and Environment Committee meeting in Orlando, we agreed for a variety of reasons, to not get involved in a waste minimization project on scrap resin and compound. However, we did agree that it is worthwhile continuing to search for waste minimization projects that could reduce waste from our manufacturing locations. It was suggested that empty catalyst jugs may be a universal problem for all PVC manufacturers and that this may be a ripe area for further work.
We agreed to schedule a meeting with catalyst manufacturers who are VI
affiliate members. (Lucidol and Witco are currently affiliate members and
Akzo has applied for affiliate membership. Their application will be
considered in the March VI Board Meeting.) This meeting would take place
May 10 or 11 at the VI Annual Meeting where representatives of catalyst
users and producers will already be together for activities surrounding the
Annual Meeting.
If possible, I would like to have the catalyst
manufacturers attend the HSE Committee meeting on Thursday afternoon. I
would expect we could get a lot accomplished in an hour. If it looks like
there is a potential for progress in this area, we can schedule a follow
up meeting at a later date.
In order to have a meaningful discussion, each of you who are PVC producers need to understand your plant position and situation regarding recycle of catalyst jugs or replacement with some other kind of returnable container. Some manufacturers may have strong feelings about changing anything due to process considerations. I urge you to poll you plants and bring those opinions to the May meeting.
Meredith, could you include this item on the agenda for our next meeting and advise the catalyst manufacturers well in advance of our desire to discuss catalyst jug waste minimization?
