Dear Mr. Dworkin:
In response to your letter of August 16, our investigation indicates that the subject paint was part of a brand which was discontinued in 1967 and had been reformulated to contain less than 17. lead in 1963.
If the numbers contained in the New York Times newspaper reports are accurate, the particular batch of paint to which your letter has reference, was manufactured in 1956.
I trust the above satisfies your inquiry, however, if anything further is considered necessary, please advise.

Dear Mr. Dworkin:
This letter will supplement and update Mr. Rechin's letter to you of August 24, 1971. It has now been brought to our attention that additional containers of certain colors of our former Japalac line have been found in retail establishments in the New York City metropolitan area. As indicated to you earlier, this particular line was discontinued in 1967 and had been reformulated to contain less than 17. lead in all colors in 1963.
You are advised that we will exercise due diligence and make our best efforts to recall all such Japalac paint containing more than 17. lead. We will notify all of our distributors and will use our own staff to try to run down and re call all such products from customers with whom we no longer have a business relationship.
It should be noted however, that while we will do our best to recall these products, that retailers having possession of such items likewise have a certain responsibility. It should be further noted that we may well have some difficulty in obtaining the recall of all of the outstanding products. This effort will take time to accomplish and very possibly may not be successful in recalling all such products which may be available for sale in the New York City area.
We trust the above indicates our sincere desire to be cooperative in efforts to remove such paint from the normal channels of public distribution.

Dear Mr. Dworkin:
Reference is made to your letter addressed to Glidden-Durkee dated November 3, 1971 and my subsequent telephone conversation with Mr. Bernstein of your office I have made arrangements for one of our employees to be at Tri-State Hardware during the week of December 6 for the purpose of securing and destroying the two items covered by your embargo.
Mr. Bernstein has indicated that he will contact Tri-State Hardware authorizing the store to release these materials to our employee for this purpose.
