Subject: Monthly meeting of the Santa Barbara County Hospital Medical Staff
On December lb, 1950. Dr, Invited me to the dinner meeting meeting v?.g Dr. Welter Anderson, earth. After his talk he showed Johno-Manvi H e .
Nardo, nev Health Officer of Santa Barbara County, of the above organization. Main weaker of the who poke on Pneumoconiosis produced by dlatoosceona chest x-ray alides of many of the employees of
Important point that he brought up were (l) 108 dlssbllny ranee of pneumo coniosis hare been recorded at Loarooe within the past 20 year, with IB death. Many cae o f progressive conglomerate lelon have been oberred with exposures of 1 to 2 year to the dust. One case was observed after a ? month tic o iu re ,
(2 ) The conglomerate lesion which are disabling ars caused by the processed
powder, which change the amorphous l i l i c a to critobalite (60^) and trldymite (25t). The r e la tiv e t o x i c i t y of thee two crystal compared to quart i : quartz 5, trldymite 8, and critobalite 9 .
(3) IntiS^venon .lnnoculatlon of animal* by Gardner with the untreated dlatomaceous earth caused fib ro sis and death to the animal*.
(b) The typ ica l x-ray picture* of thi* pneumoconotis are very different from t y p ic a l s i l i c o s i s pictures. There 1* not the typical nodulation bat sometimes a pseudonoduletion i s observed. Instead o f the arte rial systems being involved, as in the ease o f s i l i c o s i s , pneumoconiosis da* to distomsceoas earth involves the venous vascular system*
(5) Lanxa says that ths incidence of T.B. at Lompoc 1* no higher than at Santa Marla (supposedly a comparable community) but Anderson think* that the residents at Lompoc j l more susceptible.
I was unable to talk with Dr. Anderson after the meeting, but on the previous day, I had made arrangements with Mr. Legge and Mr. Wilson, of Johns-Manvills to do a sizeable engineering study there this Jebruary.
