SUGGESTED PROCEDURE
(a) Identify all persons with potential for exposure to airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers at or above the action level and keep them under medical surveillance as required by the OSHA Standard. (b) The plant physician should notify management and the employee of abnormal findings and provide a written opinion to management on the suitability of the employee to work in an asbestos area with or without respiratory protection. (c) Known cases of asbestosis should be evaluated periodically by the plant physician and an opinion expressed as to their fitness for the work they are engaged in. (d) No employee should be assigned to duties with potential for asbestos exposure unless a medical clearance has first been obtained and a medical examination has been performed in accordance with the requirements of the OSHA Standard. Upon termination a re-evaluation should be performed as required by the OSHA Standard. In the case involving a decision as to whether an employee with an asbestos-related condition should or should not continue to work in a particular area or occupation, agreement and understanding should be reached between the physician, employee, employee relations department and supervisors to expedite a reasonable outcome.
