In one of their first applications in single-family homes, these open-web steel studs were used this spring in construc tion of a house in Marshalltown, Iowa, as framing for the Sheetrock Wallboard double wall system. Use of the studs greatly simplified electrical and plumbing installation. In this double wall job, the base layer of %-in. 2x8-ft. Baxbord Gypsum Backing Board was clipped to the Trussteel studs. A face layer of %-in. Sheetrock was then adhesively bonded to the base layer. Snap-in runner track at nnm 7 i 134 floor and ceiling aligned and spaced the studs. Floor track was nailed to a wood 2x4 base while ceiling track was attached to a 1x4 plate to facilitate track, facing and trim attachment. This produced a finished partition weighing approximately 7 lbs. per sq. ft. A pleasing discovery to the owners of the Marshalltown house, Mr. & Mrs. William Gray, was the speed with which interior partitions were erected and readied for finishing. The clean, uncluttered condition of working areas permitted an early start on later construction phases. Added fire protection also is provided through use of the incombustible steel studs and fireproof Sheetrock Gypsum Wallboard facing. It is apparent that much skillful planning, from architect to decorator, was devoted to this home designed by James Zintel, who heads the Winters company's architectural de partment. International Business Machine Company is in the midst of building a series of handsome new structures to house its dis trict headquarters throughout the nation. Experience has shown that IBM office space requirements change frequently and that the job of shifting a partition should be quick, easy and clean.
