It would be very helpful if you would make a similar estimate for generating a personnel sample. Would you please estimate your present and future sampling cost and volume and share that estimate with me by mid May. The Industrial Hygiene department is joining with me to conduct an in-depth study of the efficiency, accuracy and the economics of personnel monitoring for vinyl chloride. D/8506 Costs of Analyzing Personnel Samplings for Vinyl Chloride CATS YCUR LSTTcR DAlc THIS lcTTSR March 3, 1982 Thank you very much for all of your responses to my October 26 letter dealing with the analysis of personnel samplings for vinyl chloride. Your comments are very pertinent and helpful. Several questions arise from your views, "What does it cost us to test a personnel sample for VC1?", "How does that cost vary from plant to plant?" and "What is the total cost throughout the Chemical Group?" My reason for raising these questions centers about the newly announced Perkin-Elmer ATD-50. This "gadget" is ah automatic thermal desorber that operates exceptionally well. During a day-long visit to the Brecksville R & D Center the ATD-50 analyzed seven vinyl chloride cross check tubes with a 3.OX relative standard deviation! The tubes, as is the usual case, were all loaded at the 5 ug level. I feel this performance is outstanding. At a price of $21,000 the ATD-50 may not be appropriate for every laboratory. But, there could be merit to a proposal for a single installation providing service to all of the plants. Obviously, in order to consider such an alternative, a thorough review of economics is necessary. In addition, we will have to determine the maximum and imum turnaround requirements for samples and test results. I will appreciate very much hearing from each of you regarding these questions and this issue. It would be very helpful if I could have your responses, by mid May or the next chief chemists meeting (whichever comes first).
