On F e b ru a ry 11, 1977, the w rite r investigated em ployee exposure to airborne asbestos fibers and oil m ist at the Toledo Machining Plant. The re su lts of this survey a re listed on the attached data sheets opposite the corresponding job description. At the tim e of this survey it was noted that certain skids of disc brake shoes (P a rt No. 4036009) shipped fro m T renton C hem ical on Jan u a ry 11, 1977 appeared to be contam inated with significant q u antities of loose asbestos dust. Subsequent air sam ples obtained in the breathing zone of the m ost sev erely affected em ployee, i. e . , a ir sam ple (1), indicated a tim e-w eighted average asb esto s exposure of 1. 9 fib e rs p er cubic c e n tim e te r of a ir. The OSHA P e rm issib le E xposure L im it fo r asb esto s is 2. 0 fib ers, longer than five m icrons in length, per cubic centim eter' of a ir. P ast experience at this work station has shown that exposures of this magnitude will only occur when the brake shoes a re contam inated with significant quantities of loose asbestos dust. f! C h ry sler Chem ical Division has inform ed the corporate Industrial Hygiene " D epartm ent that th e dust condition observed on F e b ru a ry 11, 1977 resu lted from inadequate maintenance of the "defuzzer" cleaning brush, which rem oves loose asbestos fibers from the disc brake shoes p rio r to shipment. ' r- In addition, C hem ical Division has a ss u re d us that they will carefu lly . m onitor the condition of the "defuzzer" equipment and the disc brake shoes, so as to prevent any recu rren ce of the dust condition which existed at the tim e of th is survey. * ' No corrective action is recommended at this tim e for those work stations ` w here employee exposure was found to be w ell within the applicable OSHA Perm issible Exposure Limit. . -!
