Has Shah Wendy Sherman CMA CMA Ken Mundt* Applied Epidemiology, Inc * Denotes part-time attendance. 1.0 Approval of November 26,1996 Record of Meeting and Changes to the Agenda The Panel approved the November 26, 1996 Record of Meeting with no changes. H. Shah recommended amending the agenda to include a discussion of the nomination of a new Vinyl Chloride Health Committee Chairperson. 2.0 Update on the Applied Epidemiology, Inc. (AE1) Vinyl Chloride Cohort Study K. Mundt briefed the Panel on the status of the AEI cohort study. Data gaps were identified for two chemical plants that had recently changed ownership. J. Knaak will investigate the potential for providing additional information on employees at a Burlington plant recently sold by Occidental. H. Shah will provide a contact at Shell if necessary. In general, K. Mundt reported that the project is on schedule, with a report expected by the end of the year. 3.0 Update on the University of Louisville Brain Cancer Study K. Mundt also provided the update on a January 17,1997 meeting and subsequent conference call (January 21,1997) with C. Tamburro and P. Fortwengler in Louisville, KY. In response to concerns raised by reviewers, C. Tamburro agreed to a number of suggested activities including participating in a mini-symposium to explore alternative methods for analyzing the data and selection of a final strategy, and updating the BFG 00026 Record of Conference Call -2/18/97 Page 2 protocol to meet requirements of CMA' Guidelines for Good Epidemiological Practices. K. Mundt noted that in the future, expert reviewers' comments on the protocol will also need to be formally addressed. A copy of the briefing notebook, sanitized of all individual identifiers was sent by P. Fortwengler to K. Mundt. K. Mundt will send an Excel file containing information on CMA's Louisville plant cohort to C. Tamburro. H. Shah will coordinate a date for the mini-symposium with C. Tamburro and Panel members for late March or early April. 4.0 Update on Huntington Life Sciences Vinyl Chloride Developmental, Reproductive, and Molecular Research Studies J. Knaak briefed Panel members on the status of the Huntington Life Sciences reproductive and developmental toxicity studies including calibration of the infraredgas chromatograph. H. Shah informed the panel that the additional infrared-gas chromatographic analysis will cost an additional $ 30,000, however, even with the additional cost, the project will still be within its budget. The Panel approved the additional funding for the analytical work and five extra units for data and specimen storage at Huntington Life Sciences. Overall, the study is on schedule and J. Knaak, D. Penny and W. Sherman will make a follow-up visit to the facility in March. J. Knaak will arrange the meeting at Huntington. J. Knaak also reported that he and J. Swenberg will soon be finalizing the protocols for the University of North Carolina molecular carcinogenesis satellite studies at Huntington. 5.0 Update on CDC's SO1" Anniversary Reprinting in MMWR of the Article "Angiosarcoma of the Liver Among Polyvinyl Chloride Workers" E. Beeler notified panel members that the Center for Disease Control had agreed to correct a number of statements in their anniversary reprint of a 1974 article and 1997 editorial on angiosarcoma in polyvinyl chloride workers. H. Shah will send a copy of the article and editorial notes to panel members. 6.0 Selection of New Committee Chairperson The committee will elect a new chairperson at the next meeting. 7.0 Schedule Next Meeting The next meeting is scheduled for April 23,1997 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. EST.
