Attending from the community were: Raben Andrews Marge Biddle Mike Miller Dorothy Pottinger Frank Schaper Carol Strawbridge Attending from Solutia were: Bob Auer Bob Cheever Jim Hart Brad Young Facilitating was: Nancy Pollock, Alliance Communication The meeting began at about 5:45 p.m. with an agenda preview from Bob Cheever. During dinner, the group watched a videotape of an ABC News program called "Are We Scaring Ourselves To Death." The tape assessed real relative risks of a variety of activities from walking on stairs to flying in airplanes to living near chemical plants and concluded the public often lets emotion rather than fact create concern about the wrong things. After the tape, Nancy Pollock reviewed the fundamentals of communicating effectively about risk, including some factors that determine how emotionally people respond to certain incidents. For example, a plane crash that kills 200 people at once is DSM 138000 STLCOPCB4037957 more frightening and gets more media coverage than the several hundred deaths that occur one or two at a time in auto accidents every day. Next, Cheever asked the group to review its original mission statement and charter to see if either needed changing. Carol Strawbridge said the CAP'S vision statement accurately reflected the fact that Solutia has an obligation to share information with neighbors. She added that through her participation in the CAP, she is better able to answer questions about the J.F. Queeny site or refer someone in the neighborhood to a contact at Solutia. Cheever said later in the year Solutia will follow up with the site's union offer to adopt needy families in the area at holiday time. Then Cheever, reviewed that four neighborhood teachers were sponsored by Solutia to participate in the annual TIE environmental workshop in mid-February in Jefferson County. Dorothy Pottinger was a participant and said she received valuable information that she's already incorporated into a rewritten science curriculum and made contacts with other local teachers that will continue to bring future benefits. Brad Young asked CAP members if the group met their organizations. Marge Biddle said for her the answer is definitely yes. Others agreed. Cheever shared that in March an outside audit team will visit the site and other Solutia plants to determine the company's compliance with a voluntary Chemical Manufacturers of America program called Responsible Care. He added that Solutia has supported the Wildlife Habitat Council and that backyard conversation kits are available. Kits will be sent to CAP members so they can help determine the most effective way to use them in the community. The Queeny site has about five acres of unused space at the south end of the plant between Barton and Wharf Streets and is willing to make the area available to the community for an appropriate project. Cheever suggested possibly returning the space to its natural prairie grass state and asked for suggestions from others. The next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, April 14.
