ANSI Committee, C107 M a y 1, 1971 Dear Sir: The Monsanto Company, the sole U. S. producer of polychlor inated biphenyls (PCB's) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) have joined in recommending the formation of an American National Standards Committee with the objective of devel oping recommended procedures for the use, maintenance, and dis posal of askarel and askarel-soaked materials. The Committee, designated as C107, was recently approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The formation of the Committee is considered essential to supplement the efforts of the Mon s a n t o Company and the U. S. trans former and capacitor manufacturers in their efforts to control the use, maintenance, and disposal of askarel and askarel-soaked mate rials. Askarels consist of or contain polychlorinated biphenyls which can become persistent environmental contaminants. Contact with the environment should be minimized. An organization meeting will be held for a review of the pertinent background leading to the formation of the Committee, the establishment of objectives and appointment of appropriate subcommittees. It will be held at a central location and at a convenient time,, either d u ring the w e e k of May 31 or June 7, 1971. To insure representation of jail concerned, your organization is invited and encouraged to participate. It would, therefore, be very much appreciated if you would supply me with the name(s) and addresses of persons you will designate to represent your organization by MAY 15, 1971. Attached, for your information in complying with this re quest, is the scope approved by ANSI and a list of organizations being invited to participate.
