NHANES II and the Reported Blood Lead Decline The NHANES II program was a stratified, multistage probability cluster sample survey designed to gather health and nutritional data reflecting a representative cross section of the noninstitutionalized U.S. population. The study took four years, from February 1976 to February 1980, covering 64 primary sampling locations - 16 in each of 4 approximately equipopulated regions of the U.S. The four-year study was designed to provide an estimate of the prevalence of specifically defined diseases in the U.S. population, and to permit estimation of a broad variety of health-related measurements, at the midpoint of the survey period. The NHANES II protocol called for a probabilty sample of the U.S. population for persons 6 months to 74 years of age. Subgroups of special interest were preschool children (6 months - 5 years), the aged (60-74 years) and persons living in poverty areas. These groups were oversampled to improve the reliability of the statistics for the subgroups., The total sample size was 27,801 persons with each primary sampling unit being 300-600 persons. Of this total, 20,322 (73.136) were examined. The survey was designed so that precise statistics could be produced for the four broad geographic regions of the United States and for the total population by age, sex, race and income classifications. Findings for each sample person were inflated by the reciprocal of the probability of selecting a person, adjusted for persons who were not examined and post-stratified so that the final estimates closely approximate the population of the U.S. by race, sex and age as of March 1, 1978.
