The Great Lakes carbon Company8s DlcaXlte WB5 (diato s&esous earth) appeared to be .a direst substitute- for celite 281 in both types f products*
The use of the National Lead Cepanyas Lordte (a natural mineral .composed of dl&tomite and calcium carbonate) seemed to give a direct finished product match to its Oolite 281 counterpart in the deep tint; however* in the Sou and Country Flat White* it gave an acceptable product but it was not a direct product match because of a very slightly higher sheen*
Wollastonite (calcium tneba .silicate)* a recently promoted material* did not appear of interest because of film appearance and grit*
Incomplete evidence showed that the Great lakes Carbon Company8s Bicallte L2 was promising and that Bioalits J>1 was note.
celite 266 (w-165) appears to be promising as m alternate raw material substitute for Celite 281 in the new deep tints; because of its poor color* it could not be considered in .the white formulation*

Satisfactory production batfees on a lov dor basis wore emmifaotsured with the Bleslit S=5 extender and the Lorite extern* dor for both types of flat wall, paint However, as stated before, the .Lorite extender-.In the high F9C"TlH3al" formula. does give slightly higher hut not objectionable* sheen
The various aspects of the development are discussed in the following paragraphs?
The physical property characteristics of the Lorit (M-50TB} and Dicalite B-5 (KSH5079) formulations were comparable to Cellto 2Bl for both types of formula? that is the application color color holdout films appearance and stability were equal except for a slightly higher .sheen in the case of the Lorite in the high FPC-"Ti*C/al" formula
In the deep tint T!Oo^extender formula, the Cellte 26.6 {W165} version was also equal in physical property characteristics
The method f substituting or replacing the Celite 281 In both types of formulae with these various extenders Dicallt W&~5, Bicalite .L-l, Bicalite L-2 Wollaston!t jp-i and P-4 and the Oolite 266 ms a direct pouncl-for-pound substitution In the ease of the Lorit, for the high PC"wT;l-oal" whit type formula, the volume of calcium carbonate (w90) and Celite 281 (w-99) was replaced by m equal volume of Lorit? another replacement was half by weight of the previously stated volume of Lorite plus additional calcium carbonate to .maintain the same PG 0 For the titanium dioxdextendr deep tint formula, the dlatomaesous earth content of the Lorite replaced the Oolite ,281 .and the FFC . of tbs paint was jaaintainefl the same by adjusting the calcium carbonate (w90)o
The Wollaston!te P1 grade (jGH393) extender gave .a slightly higher sheen in the high F0-t3fiCalft type of formula and in the case of the TiOg~xtender type of formula a fibreus texture W coaid not detect any difference in the laboratory between the Hollatonit pl and p4 gredia and, inasmuch as the pl grade was cheaper and sossicrei&lly available it was selected for the production evaluation batches of each type of fiat wall paint The production batches showed excessive large six agglomerates r grit
Several -other diatcra&eeous earth extenders., the Blealites 3>1 {DS24lll} and L2 08-24258} , wore examined in this studyp but not enough sample was available for a. comprehend siv evaluation However, it may b stated that the Bicalite 5>2 appears promising
The cost of these extender substitution foHsulations was appreximately the same as the Oolite 281 central*
