I will attempt to clarify it as briefly as possible. 1.) All plants using toxic dusts such as asbestos, silica, talc, mica, dlatooaceous earth, cellte, etc., are to establish a dust testing program as required by G.0.3, 4-6. 2.) The dust testing program is divided into two parts; A.) Talcing of airborne dust samples at a plant. . The equipment necessary to take these samples consists of: . a.) One Unlco, Model C 110, self-contained, batteryoperated, air pump. " b.) One filter holder. c.) One filter holder bracket for attachment of the filter holder to the pump for one hand operation. d.) 25 individually packaged filters. e.) One carrying case. Note: All this equipment is obtainable from Mr. i'arv Scheldt at our Research Center thru use of a Transfer Loading Ticket (T.L.T.). Approximate cost for the equipment is i300.00 per set, which is to be taken into plant cost. As part of this cost Research will calibrate the filter holders to the pumps which is necessary for the dust count lag operation. * B.) Dust Counting '% : This can be done by the following locations; > Research Center Baltimore Gypsum South Gate These locations ere obtaining necessary Dust Counting equipment. I I United States Gypsum Company 1 'i - 2- A brief instruction manual is being prepared to explain hov, end hov often, to teke dust samples, hov to ship them to the Dust Counting facility and hov the samples are to be counted. In addition, plant personnel will be trained in hov to take samples by: a.) The Division Representative that attended the American Mutual School. - or b.) An American Mutual Industrial Hygienist. Taking of samples is quite simple. At present, Printing is preparing the necessary Work Sheets and reporting forms to compliment the program. All Divisions have replied as to their preliminary equipment requirements. Marv Schmidt has ordered 25 pumps and 3C filter holders vhich vill be shipped to the plants upon receipt, after calibration. This should take place sometime in August. Nov la the time to submit your T.L.T. to cover the 5 items shown under 2.), A.) on the first page of this memo. The Intent of this program is to make known to the plants, Divisions and Corporate Management, all toxic dust exposures, the seriousness of these exposures and all oreventatlve and corrective actions that are being taken and/or considered.
