4 PRESENT CONDITIONS

6 Fairfield Works has two 42" two-stand four-high temper mills which are no longer
7 required for current product plan. The No. 4 Temper Mill has been idle since S 1965. The No. 1 DCR Mill (formerly No. 3 Temper Mill) has been idle since 1965. ? Fairfield Works has no need for these mills other than recoverable scrap. 10
11 Gary Works has requested portions of No. 1 DCR Mill and Irvin Works has requested 12 portions of No. 4 Temper Mill. These requested components will be transferred 13 upon approval of this request. The remaining equipment will be circularized to 14 other USS plants. If no interest develops, the remaining portions of these
15 mills will be dismantled and scrapped. Cost of dismantling equipment that is 16 not currently scheduled to be transferred is estimated at $90,000. Cost of 17 restoring floors to safe and usable condition is estimated at $30,000. 11

21 Retire the two idled 1*2" temper mills. Transfer portions of mills to other 22 USS plants. Dismantle and dispose of remaining equipment when it is deemed 23 economically feasible and in the best interest of the Corporation.
