The disposal operation involves emptying the dust col lection hopper of the dry collector into a specially designed plastic bag. The bag is attached to the bottom of the hopper and the dust within is discharged into the bag through a valve. When the bag is full, it is tied, uncoupled from the hopper discharge chute, and placed into a tote box. This procedure is repeated until the hopper is empty. During the transfer of the asbestos containing dust from the hopper to the plastic bags, both breathing zone and general air samples were collected. Laboratory analyses (the results are listed on the attached data sheet) indi cate that the airborne asbestos concentrations were below the threshold limit value of 5 fibers per milliliter of air for fibers greater than 5 microns in length. hm Attachments E. Turl Data Sheet Eldon Avenue Axle Plant March 20, 1973 Location: Dry Collector in Deparment 78 Job Description: Threshold Limit Value (b) Breathing zone of employee bagging dust from hopper Airborne asbestos fiber concentrations in fibers per nilliliter during disposal operations (a) 5 fibers/ml> 5 microns in length 0.56 Adjacent to hopper discharge point at shutoff valve 0.63 General air around hopper jr-JJT discharge point. General air six feet down wind from hopper discharge 0.25 0.29 (a) Exposure concentrations obtained during unloading of collector which represents less than one hour exposure. (b) Time weighted average concentration for a daily eighthour exposure. The asbestos samples were collected on cellulose ester membrane filters using MSA, Bendix and Millipore vacuum pumps. The fibers were counted on a phase-contrast Bausch and Lomb microscope.
