Subj : R&D Final Report: MIPR 7615--76-05064 - Improved Environmental Impact Properties for AFFF Materials.
1. The change in the original schedule from completion of this project in August 1976 to June 1976 has meant that all of the planned objectives have not been fulfilled at this time.
2. Toxicity studies on marine organisms conducted by the Naval
Ship Research and Development Center with the currently qualified Ansul AFFF material have been essentially completed and the report is being compiled. This work also included BOD and COD measurements. A complete profile of the 3 currently qualified AFFF products is now available. These data are essential to the pre paration of the new revision of the MIL specification and as a base for improving the product environmentally.
3. The contract with the Ansul Co. for the development of environ mentally improved AFFF formulations is in the final stages of negotiation.
4. It is anticipated that the above work will be completed in the
near future but after June 30, 1976, the termination of support
by the present sponsor. It is recommended that the results
to date be carefully evaluated as to how they might be of immediate val
such as in the revision of the specification, and also the direction
of future, longer range efforts to reduce the potential impact of the
release of AFFF into the environment. Further financial support is .
