And electric firing devices of different kinds, sizes and strengths make up a total of approximately 1,600. The figures merely stress the fact that there is some du Pont commercial explosive suitable for practically every blasting need. The con srant function of this new device, and others like it: operating water heaters and oilier appliances, depends largely upon die purity of the gas furnished from rhe manufacturing plant. The early days of gas lighting saw very crude devices for utilizing this new fuel, and careful purification of the pr<ul ut! was not necessary > Gradu ally more efiicienr appliances were devised. Because rhesc gave some dif ficulty in operation, analyses were made to determine ways to improve the quality of the gas. Today, eilicient chemical staffs are a part of the organization of nearly every gas util ity : their sole function is to insure quality control. Condensers, scrub bers and purification systems remove niost of the impurities. But these impurities are elusive things. Naphthalene, familiar to everyone in the form of moth balls, is one of rhe products made with gas rhar occa sionally causes difficulty. It evapo rates readily, and small changers of temperature and pressure will cause it 10 condense, so that small umounrs mav be deposited as the gas flows through (he cold portions of the pipe. Gum formation is link: understood, hue it is assumed to result from certainehemical changes in some of the various compounds that are present in the gas, as gases, in very small quantities. RYAN c Ok v k r al vc:irs ago, the Borough Council of Beach Haven, New Jersey, uxnsiruucd iuu: jetties of oak and chestnut piling along the beach to protect it from erosion. These jetties were plan red in double rows so rhat rhey formed oblong smic cures about six feet wide at:d of varying lengths, depending on conditions prevailing tm rhe beach at various points, The pilings were driven down twenty-live leer in die sard just as close together m possible. Some jerries had a hon ored pilings on each side and three or four across each end; others were constructed of vary ingnumhersdn veil in the same manner. Aficr Beach Haven had begun to cevelup rapidly as a summer resort, die authorities decided to erect stone jetties, ex rend mg our into the ocean for a distance of 100 or 125 feet to protect the beach against the ravages of rhe north easr storms. The wooden jetties or clusters of pilings on the beach were no longer necessary, and as it was desired to increase the she of rhe bathing beach and !o extend rhe boardwalk, the Council decided to remove die un sightly wooden projections, which had come to be a menace to bathers. Workmen endeavored to pull each individual pile our of the sand by the use of a large tripod and block and tackle, aided by a water jet, but this was found 100 costly. The largest number pulled out in a day, with several men, was twain-five, and rhe average was much less. This method therefore was abandoned as being impractical. Council then wrote the Technical Section of the du Pont Company af Wt]mington, Delaware, and requested that an explosives expert be sent to Beach Haven to look over rhe job. They wanted advice as to whether or not H would be prac tical to cut off the pilings at a safe distance: below the surface of the sand by the use of dynamite. Mr. E. T. Wolf and ihe wn ter accordingly made a trip to the resort and decided that the job could be done with explosives. We then asked the Mayor and Council to purchase a small quantity of dynamite and electric blasting caps, and to allow us to put in a "test day" to develop just what could he done. 'This res: was so .satisfactory rhat we were authorized iu order the necessary materials to complete the job. The result of the test day's work, using 60 per cen t Quarry Gd a tin dyna mite, l1 j hv S-iuch sticks, was rhe removal of 153 oak pilings, each rang ing from cigb.1 to ten inches in diam eter. Eighty-two sticks of dynamite and about fifty elec?He blasting caps wiih K-fnot lead wires were used for that performance. Jr was then decided to use 60 per cent .Straight Nitroglycerin Dvnamiie and to try the propagated deionaoon method, whereby rhe shock of one explosion .sets oil other charges ill the same hue. This worked with com plete success and, due ro the fact that an electric blasting cap for every charge was rendered unnecessary, the cost was furrher reduced. Ir is of course impossible rn punch or dr'll a hole through loose sand ro place a charge of dynamite, for as soon as the punch bar or drill is with drawn the hole closes with the loose sand. Therefoie, it was necessary fo use a jet of water supplied from one of the local lire hydrants. Several lengths of lire hose were run from the hydranr to the jet, with a reducing coupler and a one and one-half inch hose about twenry feet long in be tween. The water jet device itself was constructed of a piece* ofone-inch pipe, ten feet long, with an elbow fitting at the top for the hose connection. The small hose, of course, was used only Jor convenience in handling; one man alone could not handle a jet direct]y connected ro a lire hose. For the detonating charge, three sticks were used, one of them primed with an electric blasting cap with eightloot wires. Eleven charges were planted against a Hke number of pil ings for each shot, 'flic primed charge was placed against the center pile and the two stick charges, without caps, were p!need against each of the five pilings extending on either side. All were placed as close its an imaginary center line drawn between piles as was possible. In placing the charges the jet is pointed down alongside the pile so th at the water pressure displaces the sand. The dynamite, lied to the end of the lath, then follows the jer down to whatever depth is desired. Wc marked each huh with blue chalk at a point six feet from the dynamite and were therefore certain of having our charges at a uniform depth. Upon the withdrawal of the water jet, sand i ni ined i a tel y ft 1 Is in an >u nd i: he ch urges and lath, and the dynamite becomes firmly embedded. By using this method and placing eleven charges each time, we were able to load, con nect and shoot 1500 piles in six and one-half days, or a dally average of 230 pilings. To save on the cost of explosives, each charge was conlined to a quan tity sufficient, to cut die piles off but not to displace them entirely from the sand. If they were blown completely free, they would be washed out to sea. This was not desirable, for the timber was needed for use in the local incin erating plant. Accordingly, a chain Was hooked around the piles, and a horse was used to pull them out and drag them away to a safe place. The total cost of cuffing off the 1500 piles was 26F2 cents each. This includes the cost of approximately J 200 pounds of dynamite, 55b dearie blasting caps with eight-foot lead wires, and six and a half days' time for a blaster. Thus, eleven pilings were blown at one "shat" that each pile was cut off clean, although there would occasionally be one that needed a small extra charge because a sliver of wood held it fast. These craters, due ro the anion of the water on the sand, filled in rapidly. We had originally advised Council tlmt we felt sure we could cur oil 175 piles per day. Our actual average, however, was well over 200, with 318 for the peak daw Consequently, the cost was less than had been csdma red. The authorities of Beach Haven have expressed their enrirc satisfaction with t lie wea k, and with the saving ol time and money result ing from the use of dynamite. TTh e annual report ol the Bureau for tJie Safe Transportation of Explosives amt Other Dangerous Articles, re cently published, shows that for the ittiili cnnsecume year rhe railroads of rhe Lhnted Sraics amt Canada have carried dynamite and black powder without a single fatality or injury to anv person. Considering that in normal tunes rail shipments of these explosives amount m the aggregate to more chan 41X^000,000 pounds, the significance of this remarkable safety record at once becomes clear. Wc salute those who h.ne contributed to such a note worthy achievement. It has been made possible as rhe result of an intensive campaign of education among rail road employees and because there has been constant supervision and enforcement of rules by officials of a bureau, which was formed in 1906 under the auspices of the Amer ican Railway Association. From an article prepared by Colonel 13. W. Dunn, chief inspector of the Pure.in of Explosives, on the occasion of the Nobel Centenary last year, we gather die following information about the development of agencies that have a hand in shaping regula tions for safe shipment of these and oilier produces. In April, 39B5,mem bers of the American Railroad Asso ciation agreed that something should be done about :hc disastrous explo sions which were occurring, ami the suggestion was made that identical rules should be put intodicctby all the carriers and enforced by a new inspec tion agene v representing them. How ever, some ol rhe officials advocaied a federal supervision anc inspection service at the planrs, wdiicli was wholly unnecessary as events have proved. So the original plan was eventually adopted, and in June, 1907* the new inspection agency called the Bureau of Explosives came into being. One of the first important acts of the new agent was to bring railroad officials and explosives manufacturers together for a conference, which. Colonel Dunn refers to as "long, earnesi and, in the end, amazingly successful." In short, they agreed to a program of co-operation to insure the safe transport of explosives. As a result rules were prescribed setting fonh the respective duties of shippers and carriers and both parties assisted the Bureau of Explosives in secur ing uniform enforcement of the regulations. In 1908, through appropriate legis lation, i he Interstate Commerce Com mission was authorized to prescribe the rules and keep them up to date, and after passage of the bill and a public hearing, the Commission de cided to approve and promulgate the rules that the Bureau of Explosives and the shippers had prepared. Since then ail parties at interest have co operated and rhe results have been most gratifying. The remarkable ten-year record of safety in carrying explosives on thc rails is current reivy bur ti may he interesting to note Hurt fifty-two years ago railroad com panics were then undecided whether to accept dynamite as freight or not. At least rhe Pennsylvania Railroad Companv officials apparently had some misgiv ings about it, for a chemist, Charles B. Dudley, was employed to make a study of dynamite manufacture at what is now the Rcpauno plant of the du Pont Company and to determine whether the product might he accepted for transjwjnatiou or not. A printed copy of his report, under a dare line of January 27, 1881, shows that he raised three pertinent ques tions about the product, in brief as follows: Would it spontaneously de compose and exploded How did it behave with sparks and fire? What would be rhe effect upon it of the jars incident to hauling, loading and unloading, and in transit; and of the concussion caused in coupling cars, and in smashing a car loaded with it, and in case of a wreck? His investigation of the plant pro cesses, described in some detail, evi dently assured him that the product was made in a proper manner, and that the risk of spontaneous decom position was very small. Commercial apple growers, because of competition and the dcvelopmcnr of many new" districts, have generally adopted specialized planring, scien- tide cultural methods, and modern ways of distributing their products. They have found that it pays well to do so, for a long period of time is required before a return can be expected from a new orchard. Over production,due to excessive planting, may result in a serious loss. Nature in a destructive mood may ruin rite work of years. Such risks must be accepted, but orchardists are too wise to accept any rhat are susceptible t o human control, such as rhe ravages of insect pests anc fungous diseases. 11 is common knowledge that many insects and fungi have retarded the progress of apple growing, but San Jose scale and rhe codling moth arc ihc most serious menaces. This moth, which is of European origint is very destructive wherever apples aregrovvn the world over, font causes enormous losses. Known also us "apple worm," this insect feeds inside the frnir, and when infestation occurs early in the growing season, the fruit usually drops from the tree. In sections where codling moths are numerous, apples approaching maturity are frequently disfigured by worms causing small punctures in rhe skin. Thev may suc cumb to a poison sprayed on the surface, hut it is then too Late, the damage has been done. In warm, dry regions apple grow ers have ro cope wirh as many as four broods of the codling moth, and as a rule it requires seven spray applica tions io avoid serious infestation. In districts subject to occasional cool weather and frequent rains, there are fewer broods to eon lend with, mid usually (hey can be controlled by one to rhrcc good sprays. Satisfactory control of this jx^st can be secured onlv by knowing when the largest number of each brood will appear and by applying the control spray in advance of their arrival. The procedure ot making them is first to laminate a piece of fabric between two sheets of the plastic, making a three-ply sheet with a fabric center. Then a linen finish is applied on the surface hv placing a piece of re.il linen between two of the lami nated sheets and applying heat and pressure. When the linen is removed, an exact reproduction of its texture is left on the surface of the pyroxylin. The stock is then cut to size and made in to rhe finished product. These col lars have the appearance of real linen ami are very durable, non-wiltmg and can be icadi y cleaned with a damp clot.Ii. Next, consider some accessories of interest to women, handbags, for example. Not so Jong ago merchants became aware that manufacturers were developing some very attractive bags by using "Pyralin'' laminated to a coiron fabric; that the cloth material was well suited for making bags rhat were of a practical, durable, good-looking and, must important, salable kind. A few months ago a few of these handbags appeared in a well-known department store in New York Can. Stylishly designed, made of this lami na ted material in beautiful shades of white, brown, blue and black, these bags immediately became popular. Sales Jerks had ironhlc keeping their counters stocked. More were pur chased, and women bought them as fast as they were shown. Other stores rushed orders to the manufacturers, and ai this writing, a vogue for these handbags has swept the country. Almost every department store, lug gage and gift shop now carries an extensive assortment in various colors and styles. The application of cotton fabric to pyroxylin plastic is a very simple process. After an unpolished shea of "Pyralin" is srraightcnccl, it is given a coaling oi cement on the side m which the fabric is to be applied. Incidentally, rhis cement, a standard solution, is the same as that used in joining together two picas of the plastic, and after a sheer is coated with it: and allowed to dry for about fifteen to twenty minutes, the surface becomes "tacky.' The fabric is then placed on the coaled side and care fully smoothed with the hands Co eliminate aiiv wrinkles that may be present. The composited sheet is then passed through a pair of rolls which insures rhe complete removal of all uneven areas. Permanent adhesion of the fabric to the plastic is secured by placing the sheet between finishing plates in a press-polish machine and subjecting it to both heat and pres sure, and then the usual polish is applied to the surface. In the finishing operation, while the composited shea, is still in the press-polish .machine, ir is possible to vary the depth of penetration of the coUoa fabric into the sheeting mate rial. If it is desired that the finished srock shall show the effect of a fabric in relief, a piece of the clotJi h placed over tlie cotton instead of a smooth finishing plate. So the sheers arc hong for a few days in heated seasoning vaults, hut this is non always essential and depends upon the eustomerC requirements. Shoe manufacturers soon realised the possibilities of this treatment of ' Pyralin," with the result that unlay many of the fabric shoes have "Pyralin"-covcred heels in some fabric finish such as moire, linen, satin and the like. In fact, any cloth, texture may he transferred ro the sheeting material and used as a covering for vvood heels, taking the place of the netted fa fit its. The problem is merely one of embedding the fabric design info the pyroxylin, and when the fabric is pulled oti, the design is left: permanently on the surface. The outstanding properties oi a "Feral in '-covered heel arc, of course, .its durability and the fact that it docs nor show scud marks. Women's shoe heels are subjected to rough wear ( ontiiiuallv. That prater has been answered, for since 169 rail lines have been projected to every State in the Union, a vast network that represents osic-third of the world's total railway mileage. We are all heiiehciarics of the ser vice rendered by this great transpor tation system that has made possible a nation-wide development of trade, commerce and industry; for the rail roads opened the way to resources that oiTcrwisc would not have been touched, perhaps, for centuries. In rhe early days, physical obstruc tions were the chief problems the railroad companies laced. Today, i r is the competition ul newer transport agencies and other diikculfics thar give concent. Bui with streamlined trains and other improvements in rail transport facilities for fast, safe, de pendable and economical service, the industry may he expected to function importantly for generations to come. It is not an easy game to master, but ir has a "come-on" rhat keeps the would-be expert hopefully plugging away imril he can score a ``rwcntv" or "twentyone.*' And then, perhaps, at the next shoot he has a "sinking spell" and breaks only '`seventeen," which so hurts his pride that lie starts anew to practice with a high resolve to get this game "down" for good. As in go!f, so in Skeef, par scores reward only those with more than average skill. It is the zest of struggle to attain perfection that keeps all sports alive. Less than a decade ago Sheet was a new sport. In 1926, W. H. Poster, editor of The N^t/rmal Sfwrfm/an, and the lateC. E. Davis, both of Andover, Massachusetts, undertook to provide a pleasing and informal variety of practice for field shooting by means of clay targets and traps. They invented this new game without real izing rim ir was destined ro gain nation-wide popularity in a surpris ingly short time. Born in the Bay State, this game was christened "Sheet" by Mrs. Gertrude Hurlbutt, of Dayton, Montana. She thought: this old Scan dinavian form of the word shoot would be apt, and Messrs. Foster and Davis though!: so too. At Ballard Vale, Massachusetts, they set up two traps, one to throw targets from a high point and the other tosrart them flvingfrom a posi tion near the ground. They drove stakes to mark stations from which the shooters would aim at the elusive clavs from a variety of angles, and when all was ready friends were in Page Seventeen vited to try this new game. We are told that there was much talking and joking between shots and main a "bird1' got away imrouched, hut shooting in this manner proved to be real sport and a general good rime was enjoved by all. From this simple start, Sheet has grown steadily in favor among sports men. Today, there arc more than SIX! Skeet clubs scattered throughout the LI ni red Stales and several foreign coun tries. Leagues and state associations have been organized. Championship tournaments are held regular!v, with shooters manifesting the same inter est in hreakingSkeer targets that they have all along shown in the older sport of trapshooting. In the opinion of Russell W. lilliotr, of Kansas City, Missouri, who is a nationally known shotgun expert and the author of "Vision in Shooting," the correct answer depends upon indi vidual characteristics of vision. We gather that if a shooter cannor see equally well with both eyes, that fact lias its hearing not only upon the iminedi;ite question, but it also deter mines whether it is herfer for him ro shoot from the right shoulder or not. If his left, eye is stronger, he should shoot from that side, and vice versa. And almost any housewife can tell you how pitifully soon her airtains and linens become soiled at an open window. Consider the effect of this on the thousands of soil able articles found in department stores, and yon can begin to realise what die cellulose film, `'Cellophane/' is doing to keep merchandise clean fur the consumer's use. For in many stores, sheets, pillow cases, blankets, lamp shades, lunch eon sets, hosiery, stationery, towels, boudoir-chair covers, notions and many other items arc being sold in 4 Cellophane''-wrapped packages. Another benefit to the customer, in addition to more sanitary merchan dise, is freedom from defects due to any excessive handling die product may receive. Safety fuse is used to fire blast ing caps, which in turn detonate dvnamitc. It is so made that the powder burns at a uniform speed through this train, with an allowable variarion of ten per cent either wav. Q. What is the proper way to I ight fuse ? A. Lighting a fuse is a verv simple operation. Bciore lighting, the fuse should he slit with a. knife so as to expose the fresh powder. When a safety match, is used, the head is placed in the split end of the fuse directly in contact with (he powder. At first glance the solution of this problem would appear to he reason ably simple, and amateur attempts were made by certain enthusiasts, who cut off the nose of the bullet. Such crude attempts, of course, were not conducive to good target accuracy, hut they illustrated the principle desired. This practice, fur thermore, reduced tlie weight ol the bullet and consequently increased the muzzle velocity. Many f designs were submitted and tested before a satisfactory sample was obtained, largely due to the iaci that the accuracy of the .22 long rifle "kleanhore" cartridge has been so remarkably consistent and the groups have been so small that the standards already established presented a diffi cult goal to reach with, such a radical change in bullet design. By utilizing the brass shell ortgi nated by the Remington Arms Com pany, Inc., in conjunction with our CIKleanbore" prifiling mixture and special powder supplied for "JHi Speed" cartridges, it was possible to establish a muzzle velocity with the proposed sharp .shoulder bullet ol 1 .300 feet per second. This high ve lociry resulted in the desired degree ol stability in flight and overcame the previous difficulties with respect to "tipping," a defect that is seri ously objected to hy target: shooters. The cartridge is oi the "K lean bore" lead - lubricated type and has nil of the desired characteristics with respect to .freedom from corrosion, pitting, or fouling of the barrel, ami the necessity for cleaning the bore ol the rifle is eliminated. The trained agricultural blaster can make a narrow, deep ditch or a shal low, wide one. By the propagation method, any length of ditch can be blown almost in the twinkling of an eye. No longer is it necessary* to dear the right of way ol stumps and boul ders before making a ditch. Modem methods make it possible to do the entire johwirh a single blast. Where a ditch up- to thirty feci in width, with a deotfi ol five to nvelve feet, is required, rhe procedure is to space the holes five or six feet apart in a singe row on rhe center line. The holes are made live to cighi feet deep, and the loading varies from twenty to hhy sticks of ditching dynamite to a hole. In order to accommodate the load, the holes aie first sprung by exploding a small charge at the bottom, thus making a chamber to receive the working loud. By the propagation method, which can be used only in wer soils, the explosion of one charge sets off all the others in the row, lor the water in the soil carries the so-called wave Pti'Ji' Twenty-Thr^v of detonation from one hole to the next one in very rapid succession. Wide, s tallow ditches of three to livc-ioot depth and ranging up to thirty leer or more in width can he blasted bv shooting a single row of holes oil each side, and rien blasting the center section. This is known as the relid raid spreading met hod. The depth and spacing of the holes, and the amount of dynamite loaded in each one, all depend upon a number of variable faelors. But the point of interest is that broad, shallow ditches can now be made with explosives. Methods of cleaning out direhes have also been improved; in fact, the technique of ditch blasting work of everv kind has undergone a very marked improvement during rhe past few years.
