Dear Dr. Kehoe: By this letter, I hope to clarify my intentions regarding your lead data and their use in the proposed study to be supported by -die Ethyl Corporation. I hope the provisions described below will be acceptable to both you and Dr. Suskind. My main concerns are to guarantee my access to this data until all of the analyses are completed and the reports are submitted for publica tion. I have no intention of removing the data from the Department and I would hope the objectives of the proposed studies will be completed while you are able to help me with its accomplishment. I also would like to have the resulting publications originate from, and with the support of, the Department (Kettering Laboratory) and would hope that this would be accomplished before I leave. If I need to leave the Department before this is all completed, then I would expect to take only working copies of the data, such as computer tapes and cards, in the event that I cannot continue supervision of the project from my new location. All of the original data, it should be pointed out, will stay within the Department. As I understand, studies similar to the lead balance exposure studies were also made analyzing for aluminum and fluoride. If it is convenient, and money is available, as I indicated previously, I would also like to have access to the aluminum and fluoride data in order to perform analyses similar to the lead analyses. The same provisions would hold-- that is, the original data would remain within the Department. Regarding the proposed lead data contract with Ethyl Corporation: I. assume that it is still acceptable, as already agreed by Ethyl Corporation representatives and Dr. Suskind, that the project money is to be given to the Department and that I am to be the project director. With adequate personnel support of the project I hope it can be completed in six months although, as I indicated, I had allowed twelve months to cover unforeseen K- 0008157 N 7502 September 19, 1974 Dr. Robert A. Kehoe Page (2) circumstances. I appreciate, however, Dr. Suskind's stated offer to allow the project to go beyond the one year.if necessary. As we all agreed, you will be first author on any publications of the data and I will respect your judgement as to what and how the data should be published. As you know, the work will be carried out also with the approval of Ethyl Corporation advisors (Zavon, Sobel and Te Her). In the event you do not want your name on the mathematical kinetic models papers which will evolve from these studies, I hope you will allow me to publish them in collaboration with those Who will have helped me with the analyses (Drs. Evert or Day of U.C. E.E. Depart ment, or others) with the appropriate acknowledgements of th central role you have played in making the analyses and data available. I want also at this time to formally thank you for allowing me the close association we have developed and for the trust and privilege you have given me in making available to me this important lead data which you have collected with much care and concern over many years. I sin cerely hope that any service I shall have given in this matter, and in my future occupational health efforts, will reflect favorably on the influences you have had on me. .
