The survey shows that between 75 and 90& of appliances sre made by three or four large companies and that the appliances themselves include stoves, heaters, torches, and lanterns. Ve hove seen the advertising literature of most of these companies, and several advertise appliances .which they claim vl.ll use leaded gasoline. .A large number ere definitely 'toted to recuire unleaded fuel. Cf those using leaded gs ^oline, the only one cf which direct knowledge is a cool stove made by the American Gas machine Company. They claim credit for their c rn engineers for work which we did during the war. We know that this equiprne operates safely and satisfactorily. Because of the potential heater hazard of large sea' use of equipment of this kind by the general public, I think that it is essential for the Corporation to investigate those appliances which use leaded gasoline. T propose to purchase and test the equipment and would very much like to discuss with you proper me thods for testing to determine if the lead in the gasoline stay s in the stove (which should be relatively/ easy) and if not, j ust how bad the hazard is (which mays not be so easy " In addition to stoves and lanterns there is some indication that Gtua.rt-Warner manufacture space heaters for automotive and perhaps airplane use which burn leaded fuel. We are attempting tc cheek up on this at the present time.
