The border around the "a" will be red and the "a" itself will be the bag, which is unbleached kraft. The Japanese warning will continue to be printed on the back and the DOT "Asbestos ORM-C" on one end. Enclosed are samples of the labels we are now applying to RG-244 bags destined for Europe. We are putting the labels on the back of the bag. Also enclosed are Xerox copies of the back of the SX bag, the current RG-244 bag, and the proposed RG-244 bag. We will also have to revise 'the bag we use for RG-144 and other open products in the same manner. It has been suggested that a new asbestos label might warn that the cancer risk associated^ with exposure to asbestos is increased by cigarette smoking. Several forms of cancer have been associated statistically with exposure to asbestos, of all the forms, lung cancer is the most prominent. However, Dr. Selikoff, in papers published in 1968 and 1973,/presented statistical evidence from which he concluded: i) the risk of non-smoking asbestos workers developing lung icer is no greater than that of the general population, and >) the risk of asbestos workers with a smoking history deve! iing lung cancer is eight times higher than the risk incurred smokers not exposed to asbestos. These data certainly suggest that a synergism exists with respect to smoking and asbestos/exposure in relation to the risk of lung cancer. No relationship was determined to exist between cigarette smoking and the othpr forms of cancer associated with asbestos workers, nor with isbestosis, It would be 1 appreciated if you would give this matter consideration in deve ' xing an asbestos label.
