101 ~ Regular in h a la tio n o f airb o rn e asbestos d u st in excessive _ n ' c o n c en tratio n s may r e s u lt in a lung d ise a se c a lle d asb e sto se s . A sbeatosia may ta k e as long as 20-30 y ea rs to develop m an exposed in d iv id u a l w ithout showing any warning symptoms in i t s e a rly s ta g e s . In i t s more advanced s ta g e s , a s b e s to s is s i g n i fica n tly reduces th e a b ility of the lungs to perform th e ir a ir ' excb&age fu n c tio n . E v en tu a lly , an in d iv id u a l `becomes sh o rt o f
- b re a th to th e p o in t o f a c tu a l' lung d i s a b i l i t y . Cough, g e n e ra l weakness, lo s s o f w eight, and c h e st p a in may also be seen as
symptoms.
.
Asbestos may a ls o be a carcin o g en , i . e . , a censer causing a g e n t. Exposure to excessive concentrations o f asbestos dust over extended p e rio d s o f tim e may be c a u s a lly r e la te d t o lung c a n c e r developm ent. The r i s k o f cancer from asb esto s i s d ra m a tic a lly increased by smoking. Again, th e re is a tim e lap se o f se v e ra l years between th e exposure and th e onset of cancer symptoms.
102 ~ Asbestos poses a p o te n tia l h e a lth h a z a rd a t every work lo c a tio n where asb e sto s o r an asb esto s c o n ta in in g m a te ria l i s oemg 'handled. Exposure to asbestos dust w ill most lik e ly occur to Insulators in manufacturing f a c ilitie s during dem olition, fa b r ic a tio n "and co v e rin g , and m ixing o f in s u la tio n cement . Employees o th e r than in s u la to r s , such as maintenance people o r
o p e ra to rs , may also experience exposure i f they a re working
nearby.
'
Asbestos i s b ein g in clu d ed as a c o n s titu e n t in some p ro d u c ts. Such h an d lin g and p ro c e ssin g may r e s u l t in employee exposure. Exposure may also occur a t v e h ic le m aintenance garages durxng -work on b ra k e s . Since brake lin in g s may co n tain as much, as 'a s b e s to s , th e clea n in g and p re p a ra tio n o f brake drums fo r new
ay generate excessive dust concentrations.
Xu some c a s e s , d u rin g c o n tra c te d in s u la tio n work a hazard may be g en erated which w ill a f f e c t A tla n tic S ic h f ie ld employees. E ff o rts should be made through th e c o n tra c to r l i a i s o n engineer
to minimize d u st g en e ratio n and employee exposure.
